Westminster Wins Final Home Game of the Season

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster men's lacrosse team defeated Gonzaga 13-11 in the final home game of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Griffins scored the final four goals of the contest to finish the year 4-1 at Dumke Field and improve to 8-3 on the season.

Westminster opened the game by scoring the first three goals, getting one each from Gian Sexsmith, Nathan Marino, and Andrew Gordon. The first half lead would eventually reach 6-1 with 9:37 to play in the opening half. Gonzaga then used an 8-3 run to hold an 11-9 lead with 7:10 remaining in the fourth quarter. Marino tied the game at 11 with 3:37 to play and Jacob Wayman netted the game-winner at the 2:27 mark. Kellen Lynn added some insurance with 1:48 on the clock to seal the victory.

The Griffins attempted 43 shots to just 36 by the visiting Bulldogs. Each team went 1-for-7 on extra-man opportunities and Gonzaga had 21 turnovers while Westminster had 20. Gonzaga also controlled the faceoff circle, winning 18 out of the 27 total faceoffs in the game.

Brett Bird and Gordon each finished with three goals to lead all Griffins. Marino was the only other player from the Griffins to score multiple goals as he finished with two. Sexsmith attempted a game-high seven shots to go with his team leading five ground balls. Dallas McLellan recorded the win between the pipes with 14 saves, including five in the final quarter.

Westminster is back in action on Saturday, April 10 when they face Utah State at Juan Diego High School in Draper, Utah. That in-state rivalry game will begin at 1 p.m.
