Westminster Defeats No. 16 Cal State Fullerton in Season Opener

Box Score HENDERSON, Nev. - The No. 3 Westminster Griffins Men's Lacrosse team opened their 2013 campaign with a 15-1 win over the No. 16 Cal State Fullerton Titans. The Griffins controlled every aspect of play for the entire game.

Westminster wasted little time, scoring at the 14:08 mark on a goal by Sophomore Attackmen Kyle Postler, assisted by Junior Midfielder Collin Madsen. A minute later, Postler again found the back of the net to give the Griffins and early two goal lead. The Westminster defense were in top condition and didn't give the Titan offense any space to operate or take clean shots.

Senior Midfielder Jake Arthur had back to back goals within minutes including a great shot on the run from the top right corner of the box. Madsen added another tally to give the Griffins a 5-0 lead near the end of the first quarter. Freshman Midfielder Elias Fairman recorded his first goal as a Griffin with 52 seconds left in the first quarter.

The second quarter began with the Griffins grabbing another goal to take a comfortable 7-0 lead. Cal State Fullerton answered back two minutes later in what would be their only goal of the game due to suffocating Griffin defensive play. The Westminster offense was a force to be reckoned with, reeling off three straight goals to take a 10-1 halftime lead.

Only one goal was scored in the third quarter when Junior Attackmen Cole Christensen found the back of the net. The Griffins began to slow the ball down and wait for the perfect shot. Their ride was tenacious, forcing several Titan turnovers at the midfield line. Freshman Goalie Erik Gronseth made his debut, saving 2 shots.

The fourth quarter began with Hometown Hero, Freshman Goalie Ben Tourek, taking the cage. Tourek grew up just a few miles away from the fields in Henderson, Nevada. The Griffins scored four goals in a seven minute span to capture their first win of the season. Tourek had five saves in his debut.

Postler finished with six assists and two goals. Christensen finished the night with four goals and one assist. A variety of Griffins won 12 out of 17 faceoffs from the center X.

The Griffins will play two games on Saturday. At 11 a.m. the Griffins will take on No. 1 St. Thomas and then face Biola at 6:30 p.m.

QUOTES
Head Coach Mason Goodhand
- What went into preparing for this game? Most teams come out and don't play well but you guys were sharp the whole game.
"We had a good scrimmage about a week ago with the U and we got all the jitters out then. It was a good opportunity to focus on the basics and that's what we've focused on the last 10 days."

- Talk about your defense only allowing one goal.
"We've put a lot of emphasis on one-and-one defense. We've been working on it since day one of the Fall and I think in this league, a lot of teams look to feed and we're going to put pressure on them and if they beat us, they have to get away from us and get a shot off."

- Who stood out to you today.
"Everyone came to play. There aren't a lot of egos on this team and our guys realize that we have strength in numbers."

Offensive Coordinator Brad Levoie
- Talk about your offensive play.
"I thought our execution was a little off but that's expected at the beginning of the season. Since they aren't giving away championships for another 2 months, our goal now is to just make sure we're throwing good passes and when we do that, good things happen."

- Who stood out to you today?
"I thought Jake Arthur was his normal self. When we set him up, he finishes. I was really happy with the effort of Brian Tyrrell, a new guy to our program. He didn't put the ball in the back of the net a ton but he's still learning the system and breaking old habits."

- Kyle Postler had six assists and two goals. Talk about his play on the field tonight.
"Kyle [Postler] has been our most steady player for the last season and a half. Even as a Freshman he would get two and two quietly everyday."

Defensive Coordinator Garrett McLean
- Talk about your defense only giving up one goal.
"I thought the defense played really well considering it was our first time out. We just focused on the little things and were able to put together a solid team effort and were able to only allow one goal."

- Who stood out to you on the defensive side of the ball?
"I think Joaquin Mixco had one of his best games out there. He had good off ball and on ball play and was real leader out there for us."

- Talk about how this game prepared you for tomorrow against St. Thomas.
"We were able to rotate a lot of guys in and get our legs under us and set a good precedence for tomorrow."
