Women’s Soccer Plays Holy Names in Tournament Opener

SALT LAKE CITY – The 24th-ranked Westminster College women's soccer will play host to the Frontier/Cal Pac Conference Tournament this weekend at Dumke Field.  Westminster enters the tournament as the No. 3 seed and will play the No. 2 seed, and Cal Pac Champions, Holy Names in the semi-finals.  That game is on Friday at 2 p.m.  The winner will advance to the championship game on Saturday at 2 p.m. against the winner of Carroll and Rocky Mountain.

Griffin Notebook
Westminster finished the regular season at 11-6-1 overall and finished in a three-way tie for the Frontier championship with a 4-2 conference record.  The Griffins have won three straight games and five of the last seven overall.  They are 8-1 at home this season and have won eight straight at Dumke Field.

Westminster finished the regular season with 36 goals and averaged 2.0 goals per contest.  They fired 260 shots with 139 of those attempts being on frame.  The Griffins average 14.4 shots per game and have added 24 assists.  The opposition has scored 19 goals and attempted 80 shots.

Margo Hickman scored 10 goals during the regular season while also leading the team with five assists.  Hickman has a team-best 70 shots and 41 shots on goal.  Heather Hillam has scored six goals with two assists and Sarah Swenson and Corie Walch have five goals apiece.  Swenson and Justine Jones have four assists each.

Dayna Winter-Nolte has recorded 11 wins in goal for the Griffins while making 59 saves.  She has a 1.04 GAA with seven shutouts and a 75.6% save percentage.

Friday's Opponent: Holy Names
Holy Names finished the regular season at 9-9 overall and shared the Cal Pac title with a 5-1 record in the league.  The Hawks have won four straight games and outscored the opposition 9-1 during that stretch.  They clinched the conference bid with a 1-0 win over Menlo last Saturday.

Brittanie Perez leads the team with 16 points with a team-high five goals and six assists.  She has scored three goals over the last five games and leads the team with 39 shots and 19 shots on goal.  Rebecca Hernandez has four goals and four assists and Kestrel Colomb has also scored four goals. Ayana Brumfield has recorded 76 saves with a 3.93 GAA in 14 games at goal for the Hawks.

Prepping the Championship
If Westminster can defeat Holy Names, they would play the winner between Carroll and Rocky Mountain in Saturday's championship game.  Carroll is the No. 1 seed after going 11-4-1 during the regular season and 4-2 in the Frontier.  They had a six-game winning streak snapped last Saturday against Rocky.

Rocky Mountain is the No. 4 seed in the tournament and finished 11-7 during the season.  They finished 4-2 in the Frontier and are winners in six of their last seven games.

Inside the Series
Westminster is 1-0 all-time versus Holy Names.  They defeated the Hawks 4-1 on Oct. 18, 2009 on a neutral field in Oakland, Calif.  Hillam scored two goals in that game for the Griffins with Alyssa Hill recording an assist.  Winter-Nolte made five stops in the win.

The Griffins have posted a 2-8-1 record in meetings against Carroll all-time with the teams splitting two games this season.  Westminster is 4-8 in 12 all-time meetings against Rocky Mountain and also split two games this year.

Back in the Polls
Westminster moved back into the Top 25 in the latest edition of the NAIA Coaches' Poll that was released on Tuesday.  The Griffins received 147 points in the poll and sit at No. 24 in this week's release.  This is the fourth time this season the team has been in the poll which is a school record.

Record Offense
Westminster is having its best offensive season in school history this season.  They have scored 36 goals this season which sets a new school record, surpassing the 32 goals scored in 2007.  The 2.0 goals per game average would be a school record, surpassing the 2007 average of 1.78.  Westminster scored at least one goal in each of the first nine games and surpassed the previous record of seven straight set in 2009.

Westminster has also recorded 24 assists so far this season.  That sets a new school record for assists in a season, surpassing the 21 assists they had in 2009.  The Griffins are averaging 1.33 helpers per contest and are ahead of the record of 1.05 set both in 2008 and 2009.

Getting Defensive
Westminster is currently allowing 1.06 goals per game to rank second in the Frontier/Cal Pac Conference.  They have a team GAA of 1.02 which would rank second in school history behind the 0.97 they had in 2010.  The Griffins have also recorded eight shutouts in 2011 which are the second most in school history.

They have recorded three straight shutouts entering the weekend and sit two shy of the all-time record of five.  Westminster hasn't allowed a goal in the last 270 minutes which is the longest streak of the season.  The longest scoreless streak in school history is 460 consecutive minutes.

The Hickman Show
Junior forward Margo Hickman has scored 10 goals with five assists and leads the team in both categories.  Her 25 points ranks second in school history for points in a season and sit just three shy of the 28 Jennifer Pirente had in 2007.  Hickman is also three goals away from matching the 13 that Pirente scored in 2007 and is only he second player to reach 10 in a season.

Hickman has scored a goal in eight games this season. She has twice scored two goals in a game and scored in seven of the first nine games.   She has added four game-winning goals and is tied with Hillam for the school record in that category.

Atop the Hill-am
Senior Hillam has scored six goals this season and with her goal at Soka on Oct. 30 she became Westminster career leader in goals and points.  During her career, Hillam has scored 20 goals and racked up 45 points.  Those are both school records as is the nine game-winning goals she has scored.

Hillam has started every game the Griffins have played since she stepped on campus in 2007.  She is the career leader in games started and is tied with Swenson for the career record of games played.  Hillam has also played 6,439 minutes during her career which is another school record.

The Ball Stops Here
Senior Winter-Nolte has been key to the Griffins success this season while starting every game in goal.  Winter-Nolte has recorded 59 saves during the year and is 10 shy of matching her career high of 69 set in 2008.  Her 11 wins this season match the school record set by Lindsay Bekken during the 2010 year and she is second in school history with seven shutouts.  Her 1.04 GAA is also the second-best in school history.

Winter-Nolte is the Westminster career leader in saves, wins and shutouts.  She has made 184 saves during her career while recording 25 wins and 14 shutouts.  Her 1.44 career GAA is second overall at Westminster while also posting a career 71.4% save percentage. 

Dumke Advantage
The Griffins have posted a 37-9-1 all-time record on the fast surface of Dumke Field.  They have never dropped more than two games in a season and finished the regular season with an 8-1 mark at home.  Westminster outscored the opposition 26-7 during the nine home games this season while recording four shutouts.

Massey Ratings
Westminster sits at No. 24 in the latest edition of the Massey ratings that were released on Sunday.  The Griffins dropped two spots from the previous week with their rating of 0.442.  According to the ratings, Westminster has played the ninth-toughest schedule and has the seventh-best home advantage.
