Griffins Get by Montana State 9-6

BOX SCORE

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster men's lacrosse team claimed a 9-6 win over Montana State at Dumke Field on Saturday afternoon. Westminster bounces back from a home loss to Utah last week with today's victory and improves to 6-3 on the season.

Andy Lehr put the Griffins ahead 1-0 with his goal midway through the opening quarter. Andrew Gordon scored back-to-back goals in the third quarter to put Westminster ahead 7-2 with 3:58 remaining in the quarter. Montana State would get to 7-4 on a Brett Hartmann goal with 11:35 remaining in the fourth, only to see the Griffins respond with goals from Matt Balk and Kellen Lynn to seal the victory.

Westminster recorded 34 shots in the game while collecting 50 ground balls. The Griffins committed 35 turnovers and forced just 31 by Montana State. Neither team managed a goal while playing a man-up with Montana State going 0-of-5 and Westminster failing in two opportunities.

Gordon, Lehr, and Lynn each scored two goals in the game for Westminster. Balk, Dallin Hall, and Gian Sexsmith also recorded one goal each in the victory. Marshall Serzen had six ground balls and won 9-of-15 faceoffs. Gordon and Matt Lambourne gathered four ground balls apiece. Dallas McLellan recorded the win between the pipes with 20 saves on 26 chances.

Westminster returns to action on Friday, April 2 when they host Metro State. The action from Dumke Field is scheduled for a 4 p.m. faceoff.
