SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's soccer team defeated No. 23 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) 1-0 Friday morning at Dumke Field.
Heather Hillam scored in the 54th minute with a nice follow through from an outside cross. This is Westminster's first win against a ranked opponent all-time, and third shutout of the season.
“I think we have really turned it around these last couple games,” assistant coach
James Taylor said. “To win at home against top ranked opponents is really good. This was a big win and we need to stay strong.”
The Griffins dominated Embry- Riddle's defense with a total of nine shots on goal, and seven corner kicks. Embry-Riddle finished with only three shots and one corner kick.
“The difference lately is that our offense is finishing off more opportunities,” Taylor added. “We are a little bit more dangerous now!”
Cori Walch had a great game by keeping her intensity strong. Walch assisted the Hillam goal with a great cross from outside the box to the far post.
Dayna Winter-Nolte recorded two saves for her fourth win and third shutout of the season. She has not allowed an opponent goal in 326 consecutive minutes.
Westminster returns to Dumke Field on Saturday, September 12 when they host College of Idaho. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
