Griffins Add Three More Giant Slalom Podiums at Copper Mountain Races

Westminster had the second-highest team total after the first day of alpine races in the Denver Invitational.

SALT LAKE CITY - Westminster men's and women's alpine ski teams added another three podium finishes over two days of giant slalom races at Copper Mountain this week.  The Griffins competed in the first day of RMISA qualifiers on Thursday before the first of two days of the Denver Invitational which will now move to Keystone Resort for Monday's slalom races.

Julia Toiviainen added her third giant slalom podium finish of the season on Thursday, finishing in second with a total time of 1:44.99 down the hill.  Toiviainen had the fastest first run of the day at 53.50 and finished less than a second from back-to-back podiums with a sixth-place finish in Friday's DU Invitational giant slalom.

Eveline Fredricsson finished fifth in Thursday's giant slalom with a total time of 1:45.52 between her two runs.  Giulia Tintorri (1:45.59), Denise Dingsleder (1:45.67), and Hannah Saethereng (1:45.68) also finished top-10 in Thursday's RMISA Qualifier.

Westminster missed out on a podium finish in Friday's women's giant slalom, but Julia Toiviainen (1:42.55), Hannah Saethereng (1:42.64) and Lana Zbasnik (1:42.83) finished seventh, eighth, and ninth, respectively to help the Griffins finish with the second-best team total (75 points) after the first event of the DU Invitational.

On the men's side, Mikkel Solbakken led the team with a third-place finish and total time of 1:42.98 on Thursday, posing the second-fastest first run at 52.99.  Francesco Gori finished fifth in Thursday's race with a total time of 1:43.11 and the third-fastest run of the day at 49.85.

Solbakken repeated his third-place finish in Friday's DU Invitational giant slalom, combing the fourth-fastest first and second runs to finish third overall with a total time of 1:38.99.  Joachim Mjelde made a jump into the top-10 in Friday's giant slalom, finishing eighth overall with a total time of 1:39.75 and a sub-50 second time in his first trip down the course (49.65).

Francesco Galdiolo finished Friday just one spot lower than the previous day, adding 18 team points with a total time of 1:40.19 to finish 13th overall.

Westminster will continue the Denver Invitational on Monday as it competes in the men's and women's slalom at Keystone Resort in Keystone, Colo.
