Alpine Ski Team Tied First After Giant Slalom At NCAA Championships

Mikkel Solbakken finished first and the women placed all three in the top-10.

FRANCONIA, N.H.—Mikkel Solbakken finished first and the women placed all three skiers in the top-10 of the Giant Slalom at the NCAA Championships.
 
The Griffins scored 137 points and are tied first with Montana State University. RMISA schools occupy the top five in team standings with the University of Colorado in third (119), the University of Utah in fourth (108) and the University of Denver in fifth (97).
 
The women's team were first on the hill and finished second with 79 points. RMISA Giant Slalom MVP Julia Toiviainen began the day strong with the second fastest first run time of 1:03.26. She just missed out on a podium finish with a total time of 2:08.67 to finish fourth. Hannah Saethereng posted the fifth fastest time of the second run to move up from eighth to sixth (2:09.05), and Lana Zbasnik rounded out the top-10 with a time of 2:10.07.
 
The men recorded 58 points only two skiers competing today. Mikkel Solbakken headlined the day with the fastest time of the day (59.99) in the first run. He finished with the second fastest time in the second run (1:01.58) to hold on to the top spot of the podium. Joachim Mjelde finished 13th with a time of (2:05.11).
 
The Griffins will be competing in the slalom in two days on Friday Mar. 12.
