Men’s Soccer at Fort Lewis, Home for Adams State

The Westminster men's soccer team will play a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games this week. The Griffins travel to Durango, Colo., for a game at Fort Lewis on Friday at 3 p.m. MT. They will then return home to host Adams State at Dumke Field on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

ABOUT WESTMINSTER
Westminster begins this week's play at 1-5 overall and 0-4 in RMAC play. They are looking to snap a four-game losing skid and are currently tied for 10th in the conference standings. The Griffins are 0-2 on the road and 1-3 at home this season.
 
The Griffins have scored five goals this season and are averaging 0.83 goals per game which ranks ninth in the conference. They are taking 5.2 shots per outing and put 38.7 percent of those attempts on goal. The teams is taking 2.67 corner kicks per game and has three assists.
 
Westminster opponents are taking 16 shots per game and putting 50 percent of them on frame. The Griffins have a 2.47 goals-against-average and they have made 33 saves with a .688 save percentage. Opponents have outscored the Griffins 10-4 in the second half or overtime and have tallied 12 assists.
 
Jonnathan Rodriguez has scored two goals to currently lead the team. Ivan Lezama, Matthew Warne, and Finn Townsley have scored the team's other three goals. Lezama has added one assist to rank second on the team with three points. Jordan Jones and Jacob Smith also have one assist this season.
 
Taylor Ruff and Sean Lyne have alternated starts in goal all season and Ruff leads the team with 17 saves. He has a 2.27 GAA and .708 save percentage. Lyne has made 15 stops with a 2.67 GAA and .652 save percentage.
 
LOOKING BACK
Westminster began a three-game road swing with a 3-1 loss at Colorado Mesa on September 25. Townsley scored in the 59th minute to level the game at 1-1 before the home side scored twice in a four minute span to secure the victory.
 
The Griffins were then shutout 4-0 at Regis on September 27. The Griffins only got seven shots in the game while allowing 26 to the home Rangers. Ruff made six saves in defeat.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
• Fort Lewis – The Skyhawks have gone 6-2 overall and are 3-0 in RMAC play this season. They are currently tied for second in the conference with nine points and they have gone 4-0 at home. FLC is scoring 2.12 goals per game and they take 17.25 shots per outing. Tamino Kroeger leads the team with four goals and Zak Lawrence has a team-high four assists and 10 points.
 
Westminster is 3-1-1 all-time against the Skyhawks and they are 0-1 in Durango. The last meetings was a 1-1 draw in Salt Lake City on October 12, 2003.
 
• Adams State – The Grizzlies enter play this week at 1-6 overall and 1-2 in RMAC action. They sit with three points in the RMAC standings and are tied for seventh. ASU is averaging 0.43 goals on 13.43 shots per game. They have a GAA of 2.71 and .648 save percentage. Three Grizzlies have scored one goal and Shane Wagner has the team's only assist.
 
The Griffins are 2-0 all-time against ASU and 1-0 at Dumke Field. They last meeting was a 2-1 win by the Griffins in double overtime on October 18, 2009 in Alamosa.
 
STABILITY AT DEFENSE
Aaron Rees anchors the Griffin defense as the senior enters the week having played in 61 games and 5,214 minutes as a Griffin. Rees has played 457 minutes this season and been on the field for 83.5 percent of the total game time. He had started 28 consecutive games dating back to the 2013 season before not playing at Regis on September 27.
 
TWO FOR RODRIGUEZ
Sophomore Jonnathan Rodriguez scored two goals against MSU Denver and currently leads the team in goals and points. The multi-goal game was the second of his career and he has recorded the past two multi-goal games by the Griffins. Rodriguez has now scored six goals in 22 games played with the Griffins.
 
RMAC PRESEASON POLL
Westminster begins its first season in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in 2015 and they were picked to finish tied for 10th in a poll of the league's coaches that was released last month. The Griffins received 18 points in the poll to tie with fellow conference newcomer, South Dakota Mines. Colorado Mines was chosen as the favorite to win the RMAC title this season. The RMAC schedule features 14 games overall with 10 counting – five home and five road – towards the season standings.
 
UP NEXT
The Griffins will return to the road next week to play two games. They open at Colorado Mines on October 9 and they visit Colorado Christian on October 11.
