Westminster Athletics is thrilled to unveil a new developmental schedule launching in the fall of 2026, a major step forward for the Men's Varsity Soccer program.
"This is a milestone moment for our men's soccer program," said Josh Pittman, Head Men's Soccer Coach. "We have explored multiple ways to elevate our program, and this development schedule is the right move. It positions Westminster to be a leader in the western region while giving us the ability to nurture and grow talented players in a competitive environment."
The new schedule is designed to strengthen the roster by providing meaningful game experience for players who are ready to develop. "Our goal is to give our athletes the chance to gain competitive minutes while preparing them to make a significant impact for the program when they are ready," Pittman added.
Citing inspiration from successful programs on the East Coast, Pittman continued, "We want to create a professional-like environment here while offering opportunities to players fresh out of high school who might otherwise struggle to find a spot. The amount of youth soccer players, international recruits, the transfer portal, and Division I roster limitations have made it tougher for high school seniors, and while this isn't a total solution, it allows us to develop more talent and simultaneously strengthen our program."
The developmental schedule will feature 6-10 competitive games each fall against local college club teams, junior colleges, and top platform teams across Utah. NCAA rules allow freshmen to participate in up to 30% of regular season games and preserve eligibility. Upperclassmen needing game minutes will also benefit, keeping sharpness and readiness high throughout the season, but will use a year of eligibility.
"There are countless benefits to this addition," Pittman said. "Player management will improve with the extra games, and it allows players to showcase their abilities more consistently. We've often seen athletes miss critical opportunities to get noticed, and this schedule will ensure they have more chances to play and develop throughout the fall."
Recruiting, scheduling, and planning are already underway. The Griffins concluded the previous season with an 11-7-2 overall record and 6-2-2 in RMAC play, and the program is eager to take this next step in building a more competitive program. Â
