SALT LAKE CITY – The 24th-ranked Westminster women's soccer team will conclude the 2014 regular season on Sunday when they play host to Rocky Mountain (Mont.) in a Frontier Conference game at Dumke Field. The game will begin at 11 a.m. MT with a presentation for the five Griffin seniors taking place before the start.
Sunday's game will be broadcast live on Griffins TV which is available online and on your mobile device and Roku players through the Livestream app. There will also be live stats available for the game.
Griffin NotebookWestminster enters the final regular season at 12-3-2 overall this season and sitting at 3-2 in the Frontier Conference. The Griffins returned to the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll this week in the 24th position. They have gone 6-0-2 at home during the year, including a 2-1 win over Carroll (Mont.) last Sunday.
The Griffins begin the week with 36 goals scored on the season for an average of 2.12 goals per game. They lead the Frontier/North Star Conference in both of those categories along with their 23 assists and 1.35 assists per game. Westminster attempts 15.6 shots per game with 55.6 percent of those shots on goal. They score a goal on every 7.4 shots taken while also taking 90 corner kick.
Westminster has allowed just nine goals this season and they are ninth in the NAIA by giving up 0.53 goals per game. They have recorded 10 shutouts to rank fifth in the country while their average of 0.59 shutouts per game ranking 14th nationally. Griffin opponents attempt 6.6 shots per game and score on every 12.56 shots attempted.
Rylei North leads the team and is tied for first in the conference with 11 goals and it is the fourth time in school history a player has recorded at least 10 goals in a season. Her 23 points are also tied for first in the conference and are the third-most in school history.
Lexi Tucker has scored eight goals with three assists for 19 points while
Nicole Carter leads the team with five assists.
Abi Yanke has tallied 12 wins and eight shutouts on the season. The junior has a 0.53 goals-against-average with 45 saves and a save percentage of .833.
Breanna Empey has made two appearances without allowing a goal and making four saves.
About Rocky MountainRocky Mountain comes to town at 7-6-1 on the season and they are 2-1-1 in the Frontier Conference. The Battlin' Bears have lost two straight since a 1-0 win over the Griffins on Oct. 11 in Billings. They average 1.36 goals per game while taking 11.71 shots. Gabi Heflin leads the team with 10 goals and she is ninth in the NAIA with five game-winning goals. Missy Schultz is 34th in the country with her 0.88 goals-against-average.
Modified RPIThe NAIA released the second edition of the Modified Ratings Percentage Index (MRPI) on Oct. 22 and it placed Westminster at No. 22. They did slip six positions from the No. 16 ranking they held when the initial poll was released on Oct. 1. The MRPI consists of the team's modified winning percentage, their opponents' winning percentage and the cumulative ratings points from the NAIA Women's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll.
School Record RankingThe NAIA released its first regular season edition of the coaches' top 25 poll on Sept. 23 and it had the Griffins ranked at No. 16 with 266 points. That is the highest ranking in school history, surpassing the No. 19 ranking the team held on Dec. 6, 2011. It was also the first top 25 poll featuring the Griffins since Oct. 16, 2012 which was a span of 18 polls. This week, Westminster holds the No. 24 position after being outside the top 25 for the previous two weeks.
Record Unbeaten StreakBy opening the season going unbeaten in their first nine games, the Griffins established a new school record unbeaten span of 14 games dating back to last season. The 2-1 loss at then-No. 14 Spring Arbor (Mich.) was the team's first loss since a 2-1 loss to Rocky Mountain (Mont.) on Oct. 20, 2013. During the 14-game stretch, Westminster outscored the opposition 29-4 with 11 shutouts and a 12-0-2 record.
Scoring StreakThe Griffins 1-0 loss at Rocky Mountain on Oct. 11 snapped the teams streak of consecutive games with at least one goal at 22-straight. That was the longest such streak in school history and it began in a 1-1 draw at Rocky on Oct. 6, 2013. During the streak, Westminster went 15-2-5 while outscoring the opposition 54-11.
Second Half SuccessWestminster has been dominate in the second half of games this season. They have outscored the opposition 21-6 after intermission while holding a 143-63 advantage in shots. The Griffins have found five game-winners after the 75th minute of play, including twice from
Abby Holbrook and an overtime strike by
Heidi Lorschider.
New Record HolderWith her goal against Carroll on Oct. 26, Rylie North became the Westminster all-time leader with 21. The junior has scored 11 goals this season to take the all-time goals scored lead from Heather Hillam. North is currently tied for first in the conference in goals and points. She needs two points to become the all-time leader in points and she is two goals away from tying the record for goals in a season.
Model of ConsistencySince coming to Westminster for the 2011 season,
Miranda Olsen has appeared in all 77 games the team has played. The senior currently ranks seventh in school history in games played and fourth in minutes played with 5,696. Her 77 consecutive games played in the third-longest span in school history and she also sits third all-time by starting the past 59 games.
Climbing the ChartsAbi Yanke has been stellar in goal for the Griffins this season and she is currently ninth in the country with a 0.53 goals-against-average. The junior is the Westminster all-time leader with her career 0.59 GAA and .814 save percentage. Yanke ranks second all-time at Westminster with 20 victories and 16 shutouts, including eight this season.
Double Figure WinsWestminster has been consistent in the past five seasons where they have notched at least 11 wins and finished with a winning record in each of those seasons. The Griffins are 61-30-9 (.655) since the start of the 2010 season and they have made two trips to the NAIA National Championships. Through Tuesday, only 15 teams across the NAIA have had double-digit victories every season since the start of the 2010 campaign. This season, Westminster was the first team in the country to reach 10 victories.
Home CookingThe Griffins have been stellar at Dumke Field since the inception of the program in 2007. They have a 48-13-6 all-time record on the home turf and they are 6-0-2 at home this season. Westminster won a school-record nine-straight home games during the 2011 campaign and extended it to 16-straight unbeaten when carried into the 2012 season. The Griffins enter the week unbeaten in nine straight home games dating back to last season.
Frontier/North Star Conference TournamentIt was announced this week that Westminster will be the No. 1 seed for next week's Frontier/North Star Conference Tournament. The Griffins will receive a bye into the semifinals and face the lowest remaining seed on Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. MT at COT Field in Billings, Mont. The championship game will be played at 11 a.m. on Nov. 9 at Wendy's Field.
