SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women's soccer team travels to Columbia, Ky. this weekend to play two games at the Lindsey Wilson Stanno Classic. Westminster begins the trip against No. 14 Martin Methodist (Tenn.) on Friday at 4 p.m. They will then play No. 1 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Both games will be streamed live and have live stats available. Links for the live features can be found in the calendar section of WestminsterGriffins.com.
GRIFFIN NOTEBOOK
Westminster enters the week at 3-3 on the season and riding a two-game winning streak. They are 0-2 on the road this season and haven't played a neutral site game. The Griffins haven't played a ranked team this season and will also be playing a night game for the first time on Saturday. Westminster has gone 1-0 on Friday and 0-2 on Saturday in 2013.
The Griffins offense is scoring 1.67 goals per game while attempting 15.5 shots per outing. Westminster has put 48 of their 93 total shots on goal and has totaled three assists. They have scored five goals in each the first and second halves with 55 of their 93 shots coming before intermission.
Westminster opponents are taking 6.5 shots per contest with an average of 0.83 goals per game. The opposition has put 22 of their shots on goal while picking up four assists. Westminster has allowed four goals after halftime and allowed 23 shots in the second 45 minutes.
LOOKING BACK
Westminster snapped a three-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over Oregon Tech on Sept. 6. They had a 22-5 edge in shots taken, but failed to score until
Lexi Tucker found the net in the 89th minute. The Griffins came back to defeat Midland (Neb.), 2-1, on Sept. 8.
Nicole Carter scored on a penalty kick in the 40th minute and then got another from Tucker in the 75th minute.
AGAINST THE OPPOSITION
The two games this weekend will mark the first time the Griffins have faced either Martin Methodist or Lindsey Wilson.
PLAYING THEM CLOSE
With six games in the books this season, five of them have been one-goal games. Westminster has gone 2-3 in those contests and 2-1 at home in that situation. All five one-goal games have come in the last five games after the Griffins opened the season with a 6-0 win over Jamestown (N.D.) in the opener.
GET THEM FIRST & EARLY
All three wins by the Griffins this season have come when they score first. They are also 2-0 when leading at the 75th minute and 1-0 when reaching the final 15 minutes tied. In contrast, the Griffins are 0-3 when the opposition scores first and 0-3 when trailing at the 75th minute.
WINNER FROM TUCKER
Senior
Lexi Tucker scored two goals last weekend with both ending up as game-winners. Her 89th minute goal against Oregon Tech is the latest goal scored by a Griffin this season, and is tied for the latest regulation game-winner in school history. She then came back for a goal in the 75th minute which also became the game-winner versus Midland.
Tucker currently leads the team with 19 shots taken and 11 shots on goal. She has also recorded a team-best two assists and is tied for the team lead with six points.
THREE FOR HARRIS
Senior
Jessica Harris is the team's leading scorer this season with three goals. She opened the year with a double in the season-opener against Jamestown and then snapped a 190-minute scoring drought by the Griffins when she scored at St. Francis (Ill.).
Harris entered the season with four career goals and only one since the start of the 2011 campaign. She has matched her career high of three goals set during her freshman campaign on 2010.
MINER ANCHORS THE BACK
Junior Miranda Miner is the anchor of the Griffin back line. After leading the team with 1,640 minutes played in 2012, Miner has played a team-high 530 minutes through the first six games this season. She has yet to miss a game during her three seasons as a Griffin, appearing in all 44 games the team has played with 40 starts.
IN NET WITH WILKINSON
Jamie Wilkinson has started all six games this season and has recorded a 0.83 goals-against-average. In 540 minute played, Wilkinson has made 17 saves and holds a .773 save percentage. She has a 3-3 record with two shutouts.
Wilkinson has made 55 saves in her Griffin career and is fourth in school history in that category. Her career .797 save percentage is second-best at Westminster and she is tops in school history with a 0.93 goals-against-average.
