Griffins Off to Pomerstone Classic

SALT LAKE CITY – The 16th-ranked Westminster College women's lacrosse team travels to Martinsville, Va. to play four games at the Pomerstone Classic this weekend. Westminster begins the trip against Miami (Ohio) on Friday at 5 p.m. The Griffins will play three time on Saturday as they face Towson at 9 a.m., Syracuse at 1 p.m. and Alabama at 5 p.m. All four games will be played at the Smith River Sports Complex.

Westminster returns to the road at 7-4 on the season and looking to snap a two-game losing skid. They dropped an 18-16 decision to Brigham Young in overtime on April 3 before falling 21-8 to Colorado State on April 5. The Griffins are 3-2 in neutral site games this season and 5-2 in all games played away from Dumke Field.

As a team, Westminster is averaging 15 goals per game while attempting 28.8 shots per contest. They have a .521 shot percentage while posting 78 assists on the 165 goals scored. The Griffins have gone 25-of-54 (46.3%) on free position shots and have claimed 264 ground balls.

Griffin opponents are scoring 12 goals per outing and they average 24.5 shots per game. The opposition has totaled 60 assists on 132 goals scored while going 13-of-34 (38.2%) in free position attempts. Westminster has allowed 155 draw controls while taking just 141.

Chelsea Farrell leads the Griffins with 43 goals and 22 assists for 65 total points. Farrell has attempted 78 shots with 62 of them on cage. She is 7-of-11 in free position shots and has five draw controls and 22 ground balls. Dana Barraco is second on the team with 52 points behind her 32 goals and 20 assists. Maggie HerrNeckar and Kaicee Beal have scored 33 and 31 goals respectively.

Makenzie Hekking has played every minute this season in goal for the Griffins. She has made 89 saves with a .403 save percentage. Hekking has an 11.89 goals-against-average and a 7-4 overall record.

Of the four teams on the schedule this weekend, Westminster has only played Towson in the team's history. The Griffins have gone 0-3 in the previous meetings with two of the losses coming at the WCLA DII National Championships the past two seasons.
