Griffins Grind Out 17-11 Win at CSU Pueblo to Stay Hot

Game Breakdown

First Half

CSU Pueblo opened the scoring before Holly Shoughro answered quickly, and Jadyn Kohan followed with a man-down goal to put Westminster up 2-1. The ThunderWolves tied it at 2-2 on a man-up free position goal from Hillary Grehan, but Shaina Shoughro restored the lead at 3-2 before a late man-up strike from Ainsley Jackson evened it at 3-3 after the first quarter. Westminster seized control in the second, with Grace Szwedko and Lexi Segaline scoring back-to-back to push the lead to 5-3. CSU Pueblo pulled even at 5-5 on goals from Sydney Gunnels and Sienna Rinn, but Adison Bendorf and Szwedko — the latter on a free position shot — closed the half with consecutive goals to send Westminster into the break leading 7-5.

Second Half

Jessie Giacomazzi opened the third quarter scoring to extend the lead to 8-5, but CSU Pueblo rattled off two straight man-up goals to pull within one at 8-7. Anabelle Kugler answered with a man-up goal and Bendorf followed to push the lead to 10-7. Holly Shoughro then scored a man-down goal off an Olivia Petrosky assist to make it 11-7, but the ThunderWolves closed the quarter with a man-up strike from Gunnels and a Shaina Shoughro response to trail 12-8 heading to the fourth. CSU Pueblo scored first in the final frame on a Sophia Rinn man-up goal to pull within three at 12-9, but Westminster responded with back-to-back goals from Williamson and Petrosky to push the advantage to 14-9. The ThunderWolves closed within three again at 14-11, but Kugler, Kohan, and Holly Shoughro on a free position shot closed out the 17-11 victory.
