Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's soccer team got a goal from
Ryan Smith in overtime to defeat Trinity Lutheran (Wash.) on Saturday afternoon at Dumke Field.
Westminster (8-4-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute on a goal from a direct kick by
Marcus Brown. His shot from 35 yards out bent around the Trinity Lutheran (8-6-1) wall and snuck just inside the far post for his second goal of the season.
The Griffins would carry that advantage until the 48th minute when George Gonzalez scored a penalty kick. The Eagles were on an attack when a Griffin defender was called for a foul in the penalty area. Gonzalez put his shot down the middle and past a diving keeper,
Nathan Young.
The game got real physical for the next 10 minutes with six yellow cards being handed out during that time. After things settled down, both teams created chances in regulation before eventually running out of time. Westminster would claim the victory in the 95th minute as Smith got his head on a cross by
Gabe Gonzalez and redirected it into the goal. It was the seventh goal of the year for Smith and the first assist by Gonzalez.
Both teams finished the contest with 10 shots while the Griffins put six shots on goal. Gonzalex had a team-best four shots and three on frame. Smith took three shots with his winner being the only one on target. Young recorded four saves and picked up his third win of the season.
Westminster will return to action on Sunday as the host No. 12 Ashford (Iowa). The game is slated for a 1:30 p.m. start at Dumke Field.
