SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's soccer team scored two straight goals to defeat Marymount (Calif.) 2-1 on Sunday at Dumke Field. The second goal came in the 87th minute to help Westminster to a second straight victory.
Westminster improves to 6-5-1 on the year with the victory and are 3-1-1 in the Unaffiliated Frontier Conference. Marymount slips to 2-8 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Marymount took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute as Viktor Ahlgren rebounded his own shot and put it in the net. Westminster goalie
Nathan Young couldn't corral the initial attempt and it bounced to the foot of Ahlgren who then put it away for the early lead.
The Griffins would draw even in the 39th minute as
Dennis Sellis slipped past the Marymount defense and finished a pass from
Manuel Duenas for his eighth goal of the season. Duenas played the ball to Sellis after collecting a through ball from
Ryan Beck.
The game-winner would come for Westminster in the 87th minute. This time
Jace Maxfield played a cross to the foot of Sellis at the top of the penalty area. Sellis took one touch and beat the keeper to the far post to record his second game-winning goal of the year.
Westminster held an 11-7 advantage in shots attempted and put seven of those 11 on frame. The Griffins also took five corner kicks and suffered 11 fouls while being whistled for 13.
Sellis attempted a team-best four shots and put them all on target.
Anthony Alcox got three shots away with one being on goal. Young earned the win in goal by making five saves.
Westminster will now finish they year with six straight road games. The stretch begins on Saturday against Northwestern (Iowa) at 2 p.m. in Orange City, Iowa.
