SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women's soccer team snapped a two-game losing skid with a 5-1 win over 25th-ranked Kansas Wesleyan on Friday afternoon at Dumke Field. Westminster (5-3) scored four times in the second half to help them to a fifth consecutive home win.
Margo Hickman put the Griffins in front 1-0 with her seventh goal of the season in the game's 23rd minute. She turned and fired a shot just below the crossbar from 14 yards away. The 1-0 advantage would carry Westminster into halftime.
Hickman got things going early in the second half for the Griffins, scoring just 52 seconds into the stanza. Her second goal of the game, and third game-winner of the season, was shot from 20 yards out and was again just below the crossbar.
Kansas Wesleyan (3-1) seemed to get the momentum of the game when Araceli Sanchez redirected a cross from Hannah Kern for a goal in the 58th minute. The visitors continued to apply pressure and had several opportunities in the next 15 minutes turned away or shots sail just wide.
Westminster responded to one of those missed KWU chances with a breakaway in the 74th minute. Hickman picked up the ball around midfield and then took four dribbles before crossing it to
Carissa Cooper. Cooper made a move past the lone defender and buried the shot into the net for her third goal of the year.
Claire Huntsberger scored her first career goal when she got her foot and a cross played in by
Justine Jones in the 90th minute. It was only the second career shot attempted by Huntsberger in 27 games played. Jones would then add the final tally with just two seconds remaining on the clock with a shot inside the far post for her first goal as a Griffin.
Westminster finished the afternoon with a 23-8 advantage in shots attempted and put 12 of those 28 on frame. The Griffins were awarded four corner kicks and suffered seven fouls.
Hickman attempted a Westminster season-high nine shots and matched a school record with six shots on goal. She has now scored multiple goals in back-to-back games and her 20 points this season is the second most in school history.
Sarah Swenson added four shots and put two of them on frame.
Dayna Winter-Nolte earned her fifth win while making two saves.
Westminster will look to continue its home success when they return to action on Sunday against the College of Idaho. The first kick from Dumke Field is slated for 11 a.m.
