SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women's soccer team erupted for five goals en route to defeating Rocky Mountain College 5-2 on Monday afternoon at Dumke Field.
The five goals by the Griffins (2-1, 1-0 Frontier) are the most they have ever scored at home and they come in the Frontier Conference opener for each team. The win also snaps a two-game losing streak against Rocky (0-2) and gives Westminster an early advantage in conference.
Westminster got on the board early when
Alyssa Hill lobbed a shot over the Rocky keeper from about 20 yards out in the 15th minute. Malin Johansson had tried to head the ball out of her own box, but it landed on the feet of Hill who then lifted over the goalie's head and into the net for her first goal of the season.
It was then time for freshman
Carissa Cooper to take control of the match for the Griffins. Cooper struck a cross from
Heather Hillam inside the far post in the 34th minute to make it 2-0 for Westminster. Then just 17 seconds before halftime, Cooper dove and got her head on a cross from
Corie Walch and put it in the net for a 3-0 Griffin advantage at the intermission.
Margo Hickman would join the scoring party in the 49th minute. Her third goal of the year came off an excellent cross from Hill. Walch would then add her name to the list of goal scorers with a strike in the 78th minute for her first tally of the season.
Sarah Snoozy would collect a rebound goal for Rocky in the 84th minute and then Chloe Pennisi redirected a corner kick for a goal in the 87th minute to reach a final score of 5-2.
Westminster finished the afternoon with 13 shots and put seven of them on frame.
Jaime Nelson fired a team-best four shots with Hickman and Cooper each posting two.
Dayna Winter-Nolte picked up the win just hours after being named the Frontier Conference player of the week. She posted three saves in claiming her second win of the year.
Westminster will return to action on Friday, September 2 when they host Biola at Dumke Field. That game will begin at noon and precede the men's game with La Sierra at 3:30 p.m.
