SALT LAKE CITY – It took almost 109 minutes, but the Westminster College women's soccer team picked up the biggest upset in school history as they defeated No. 5 Baker University 2-1 in double overtime on Friday. This is just the fourth time in 13 games that Westminster has defeated a ranked opponent and the previous highest ranking for the opposition in those wins was No. 10.

The Griffins moved to 1-1 on the year when Margo Hickman took a through ball from Jaime Nelson and popped it over the keeper for her second goal of the year with just 1:17 remaining in the second overtime period. In an earlier situation where Hickman was in alone on the keeper she tried to fire it past only to be turned away.

Baker (0-1) got on the board first with a Westminster own goal in the 60th minute. Hilary Yoder sent a cross in that bounced off the head of Westminster defender Brinna Bennion and into her own goal. The ball was played for Alix Schiraldi, but went over her head and into Bennion.

Westminster kept attacking as the game went on and in the 86th minute Hickman sent a shot that went over the head of the Baker keeper Maggie Dupes. The ball was starting to run out of steam when Brianna Wilson tapped it home for the equalizer and her first goal of the season.

The Griffins were outshot in the contest 16-14 and both teams managed to put eight shots on target. Baker also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks while Westminster was whistled for 16 fouls to just six by the visitors from Kansas.

Hickman finished the contest with a team-best seven shots and four on goal. With one goal and one assist she becomes the first Griffin to have at least three points in a game since Heather Hillam had four against Holy Names on October 18, 2009. Hillam and Sarah Swenson fired two shots apiece on Friday. Dayna Winter-Nolte made six saves in the Westminster cage, including a big stop on a Baker breakaway early in the first overtime.

Westminster will return to action on Monday, August 29 when they host Rocky Mountain in the Frontier Conference opener for each team. The action begins at 4 p.m. on Dumke Field and will also be available to watch online at livestream.com/griffins.
