SALT LAKE CITY – The 23rd-ranked Westminster College women's soccer team learned that they will face Concordia (Ore.) in the 2011 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship Opening Round. The game will be played in Portland on Saturday at 8 p.m. at Tuominen Yard.
Westminster will be making it's first-ever appearance in the NAIA National Championship on Saturday. They have gone 12-6-2 this season and clinched the NAIA berth by defeating Carroll in penalty kicks on Saturday in the championship game of the Cal Pac/Frontier Conference Tournament.
Concordia qualified for the tournament by winning the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament and enter as the No. 8 overall seed. They are 15-4-1 this season and will be making their 11th appearance in the NAIA Championships. The Cavaliers have a 17-10-2 record during the event.
Westminster and Concordia met earlier this season in Portland. Concordia handed the Griffins a 3-0 loss on Sept. 25 by scoring three first half goals. That is the only previous meeting between the two teams. The earlier meeting was not played at Tuominen Yard as Concordia just opened the field last weekend for the Cascade Tournament.
The winner of Saturday's game will advance to the National Championship final site of Jack Allen Recreation Complex in Decatur, Ala., Nov. 28 – Dec. 3. They will play the winner between Spring Arbor (Mich.) and Siena Heights (Mich.) in a Tuesday game.
