Women’s Soccer Ends Year with Two Road Games

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College women's soccer team travels to California for the final two games of the regular season this weekend.  Westminster will face Cal State San Marcos on Friday in San Marcos.  They will then face Soka University on Sunday in Aliso Viejo.

Griffin Notebook
Westminster will enter the week at 9-6-1 overall and are 4-2 in the Frontier Conference.  The Griffins split two Frontier Conference games last week, including a 2-0 win over Great Falls on Sunday.  Westminster is just 1-5-1 away from home this season and 1-3 in road games.

Westminster has scored 33 goals this season and is averaging 2.06 goals per game.  They attempt 14.4 shots per contest and have put 120 shots on goal.  The opposition scores 1.19 goals per game and attempt 9.9 shots.

Margo Hickman leads the team with nine goals. Her five assists are also a team high and she has 23 total points.  Hickman ranks 44th nationally in shots on goal (2.44) her three game-winning goals place her 49th nationally.

Dayna Winter-Nolte has posted 51 saves and five shutouts this season.  She has a 1.17 GAA with a .729 save percentage.  Winter-Nolte has allowed just two goals over the past five games played.

Friday's Opponent: No. 9 Cal State San Marcos
Cal State San Marcos brings a 13-2-1 overall record and a No. 9 national ranking into Friday contest with the Griffins.  The Cougars have won two straight and seven of their last eight.  They have recorded 13 shutouts during the years and only once allowed more than one goal.  In total, they have outscored the opposition 37-4 this season.

Shelby Bush leads the Cougars with nine goals while adding two assists for 20 points.  Bush has a team-best 27 shots on goal and ranks 14th in the NAIA with five game-winning goals.  Lauren Johnson has scored eight goals and has three assists for 19 points.  Arielle Cohen has a team-high four assists and has 10 points.  Kaycee Gunion is second nationally with a 0.28 GAA while also recording a .918 save percentage thanks to 45 saves.

Sunday's Opponent: Soka
Soka begins the final week of the regular season with a 5-8-1 overall record.  The Lions play Bethesa Christian College on Friday and are coming off a 6-0 win over Bethesa on Monday.  Prior to that win, Soka had dropped two straight and were winless in four straight.

Skyler McClanahan leads the Lions with eight goals and 19 points.  McClanahan has twice recorded a hat trick this season and has five games with at least five shots attempted.  Ariana Vasquez has scored six goals while Aubree West has five goals and a team-high five assists.  Katherine Olsen has made 120 saves with a 1.66 GAA in goal for Soka.

Inside the Series
Cal State San Marcos won the only other meetings between the two teams.  The Cougars defeated the Griffins 3-0 on Sept. 21, 2008 in San Marcos.

This will be the first-ever meeting between Westminster and Soka.  This will be the seventh game against a first-time opponent for the Griffins this season and they have gone 3-3 in the first six such games.

Offensive Explosion
Westminster is having its best offensive season in school history this season.  They have scored 33 goals this season which sets a new school record, surpassing the 32 goals scored in 2007.  The 2.06 goals per game average would be a school record, surpassing the 2007 average of 1.78.  Westminster scored at least one goal in each of the first nine games and surpassed the previous record of seven straight set in 2009.

Westminster has also recorded 22 assists so far this season.  That sets a new school record for assists in a season, surpassing the 21 assists they had in 2009.  The Griffins are averaging 1.38 helpers per contest and are ahead of the record of 1.05 set both in 2008 and 2009.

Getting Defensive
Westminster is currently allowing 1.19 goals per game to rank second in the Frontier/Cal Pac Conference.  They have a team GAA of 1.14 which would rank second in school history behind the 0.97 they had in 2010.  The Griffins have also recorded six shutouts in 2011 which is tied for the second-most in a season.

Opponents are averaging 9.9 shots per game and have put 72 of their 158 total shots on goal.  Griffin opponents score on 12% of their shot attempts and have 12 assists on 19 goals.

The Hickman Show
Junior forward Margo Hickman has scored nine goals with five assists and leads the team in both categories.  Her 23 points ranks second in school history for points in a season and sit just five shy of the 28 Jennifer Pirente had in 2007.  Hickman is also four goals away from matching the 13 Pirente scored in 2007.

Hickman has scored a goal in seven games this season. She has twice scored two goals in a game and scored in seven of the first nine games.   She has currently been held without a goal in seven straight games. Hickman has tallied at least one point in nine games and has two five-point games with one three-point game.

Senior Swenson
Senior Sarah Swenson is having a stellar season in her final campaign with the Griffins.  After scoring one goal with two assists against Marymount, Swenson is now second on the team with 14 points.  The 5-foot-6 forward is tied for second on the team with five goals and she is also second with four assists.  Swenson has five games this season with at least three points and twice has scored a goal while also recording an assist.

Swenson ranks third in school history with 38 career points and an average of 0.51 points per game.  She is the Westminster career leader in assists with 12 and she is third with 13 career goals.  She also ranks second with 116 total shots and her 68 shots on goal is the school record.

Climbing the Hill-am
With her one goal against Marymount, Heather Hillam moved into a tie for the school record with 19 career goals.  The senior also sits one point shy of the school record for points with 43 and her nine game-winning goals also rank first in school history.

This season, Hillam has scored five goals with two assists for 12 total points.  She ranks second on the team with two game-winning goals and her 33 shots are third-best.  Hillam has played a team-leading 1,384 minutes this season and has at least one point in five games.

Dumke Advantage
The Griffins have posted a 37-9-1 all-time record on the fast surface of Dumke Field.  They have never dropped more than two games in a season and finished the regular season with an 8-1 mark at home.  Westminster outscored the opposition 26-7 during the nine home games this season while recording four shutouts.

Massey Ratings
After going 1-1 on the road last week, Westminster dropped eight positions to No. 28 in the latest edition of the Massey Ratings that were released on Sunday.  The Griffins have a rating of 0.355 and sit second among teams from the Frontier/Cal Pac.  They have played the 14th-best schedule and have the No. 1 home advantage according to the ratings.

Frontier Conference vs. Cal Pac Conference
Dumke Field will play host to the Frontier/Cal Pac Conference Tournament on Nov. 11-12.  The top four teams from the two conferences will compete for an automatic invite to the NAIA National Championships.  The semi-finals will be played on Friday with games at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.  The championship will be played at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
