Women’s Soccer Plays Twice at Home

The Westminster women's soccer team returns to Dumke Field for two games this weekend. They face 10th-ranked Point Loma Nazarene is the opener on Friday, September 10 at 11 a.m. The Griffins return to action on Sunday, September 12 at 9:30 a.m. with a game against Embry-Riddle (Ariz.). Point Loma Nazarene and Embry-Riddle will play each other on Saturday, September 11 at 11 a.m. on Dumke Field.

Westminster enters the week with a 1-4-1 record and having lost three straight games. The Griffins fell twice on overtime during last week's road trip to Florida. They dropped a 2-1 decision at Northwood on September 4 and then suffered a 1-0 double-overtime loss on September 6 at Saint Thomas.

Westminster is averaging 0.5 goals per game and attempt nine shots per contest. They have put 27 of the 54 total shot attempts on frame but have scored on just 5.6% of those shots. The Griffins have also taken 23 corner kicks and posted one assist. Defensively they allow 1.33 goals per game and the opposition is averaging 12.7 shots per game.

Heather Hillam leads the team with two goals and four points. Hillam scored the only goal during last week's road trip and had scored in two straight games before the Saint Thomas loss. Sarah Swenson has the other goal for the Griffins while Lisa Johnson has posted the team's lone assist.

Lindsay Bekken has played every minute between the pipes and recorded 31 saves. Bekken has posted two shutouts and a 1.22 goals against average. She has saved 79.5% of the shots put on goal by the opposition.

Scouting No. 10 Point Loma Nazarene
Point Loma Nazarene visits Salt Lake City with a No. 10 national ranking and a 0-0-1 record. The Sea Lions played San Diego Christian to a scoreless draw on August 31 in the season opener. Lindsay Richert played the entire way between the pipes and earned the shutout. Kelly Christerson and Erica Wessels each attempted a team-best three shots in the opener.

Scouting Embry-Riddle (AZ)
Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) comes to Salt Lake City for the third consecutive season. The Eagles are currently 2-1-1 on the season and received one point in the latest NAIA Top 25 poll. Brittany Murillo leads the team with four goals and eight points. She notched a hat trick against William Penn on August 27. Six other Eagles have scored one goal this season including Whitney Desmarias who also has three assists. Ciarra Pederson has made 14 saves with a 2.22 goals against average at goalie.

Getting Their Money's Worth
Westminster has played four overtime games in six contests already in 2010. They have gone 1-2-1 in those games with all the goals coming within the first or final minute of the overtime session. Against Northwest Nazarene, Westminster scored with 48 second left. The loss at Northwood came on a goal just 50 seconds into the start of overtime while the loss at Saint Thomas came with just four second remaining in the second overtime. Westminster is 2-4-4 all-time in overtime games.

When it Counts
Sarah Swenson scored nine minutes into overtime against Northwest Nazarene for the fifth game winning goal of her career. Swenson has scored seven goals during her career and her last four goals have all been game winners. Her five game winners are tied for first in school history.

Record Chasing
Several players enter the season either in reach of school career records or as the current leader. Vanessa Jordan, Sarah Swenson, and Maddie Spere are all tied with six career assists which is tops in school history. Spere holds the record with 44 games started and is second in school history with nine goals scored. Rachel Watson has appeared in a school-best 63 games.

Unaffiliated Information
The Dakota Athletic Conference, Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference, and Frontier Conference will combine to offer one automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships in 2010. The top-4 teams in this group will advance to the Unaffiliated Conference Tournament with the winner receiving the automatic berth.

Looking Ahead
Westminster opens Frontier Conference action when they host Great Falls on September 19. First kick from Dumke Field that day is scheduled for 1 p.m.
