Men’s Soccer Hosts Conference Rival Great Falls

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster men's soccer returns to Dumke Field for a home game against Frontier Conference rival Great Falls. The game on Saturday, September 25 at 1:30 p.m. in the conference opener for the Griffins and is the eighth home game of the year.

Westminster heads into the contest at 7-3 on the season despite a current two-game losing skid. The Griffins received 95 points in the latest edition of the 2010 NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 poll to sit just outside the top 25 in 26th. The team went 1-2 on the road last week, starting with a 4-2 at MidAmerica Namezere. They then dropped a 2-1 decision at Baker University and suffered a 3-2 loss at No. 21 Kansas Wesleyan.

The Griffins are averaging 1.8 goals per game and have fired 139 shots. They have put 67 shots on goal while scoring on 12.9% of the 139 total shots. Defensively they allow 1.1 goals per game and limit the opposition to 10.1 shots per outing. Westminster has taken 32 corner kicks and recorded eight assists.

Dennis Sellis has scored a team-best eight goals and leads the team with 17 points. Sellis has also recorded 25 shots and put 17 of them on frame. Nic Duncan and Jace Maxfield have scored three goals apiece and Duncan has seven total points. Jonathan Parker has two goals and a team-bets two assists.

Damir Sabanovic and Nathan Young have each seen time at goalkeeper this season. Sabanovic has a 0.49 GAA and has stopped 88.9% of the shots on goal by the opposition with two shutouts. Young has gone 3-3 with 26 saves and a 1.50 GAA in his six games between the pipes.

Scouting Great Falls
Great Falls enters the week with a 6-1-1 record and are 4-0-1 in the last five outings. The Argonauts will open Frontier Conference play on September 23 when they visit Rocky Mountain College. They defeated Jamestown College 7-0 in the last outing on September 12. Ryan O'Neil and David Jiminez have each scored four goals to lead the team. O'Neil has also added two assists for a team-best 10 points. Alex Martinez is tied with O'Neil for the team lead with two assists. Zach Johnson has a 1.16 GAA and 34 saves in his seven games between the pipes.

Weekly Honors
Nathan Young was named the Frontier Conference Defensive Player of the Week after averaging 6.7 saves per game in the Griffins three road games last week. Young won the award for the first time in his career. Dennis Sellis was the Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals with one assist. Sellis won the award for the second time this season and the third time in his career.

Milestone Game
Westminster's last game at Kansas Wesleyan was the 500th game in school history. The Griffins have gone 423-221-36 in those 500 games, all under current head coach Chris Dorich. The .522 winning percentage is quite impressive considering the team went 6-18-3 during the first two seasons of the program. This is the 27th season of men's soccer at Westminster College.

Where They Rank
Westminster ranks seventh nationally with three shutouts to start the season. They are also 35th in total goals with 18 and 38th with 42 total saves. Dennis Sellis leads the nation with five game winning goals and 0.5 game winning goals per game. His eight goals are 13th nationally and his 17 points is 17th.

In the Rankings
After two straight weeks in the 2010 NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 poll, Westminster has fallen out this week. Westminster received 95 points to sit tied for 26th in this week's poll after being No. 15 last week. The No. 15 ranking last week was the highest the team had been since 2001.

Dumke Advantage
Since starting play on Dumke Field in 2006, Westminster has compiled a 31-8-2 record on its home field. They haven't lost more than once on the field since 2007 and have won nine of the last 10 games played there. The Griffins have outscored the opposition 96-34 in the 41 games played at Dumke Field.

Unaffiliated Information
The Dakota Athletic Conference, Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference, and Frontier Conference will combine to offer one automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships in 2010. The top-4 teams in this group will advance to the Unaffiliated Conference Tournament with the winner receiving the automatic berth.

Looking Ahead
Westminster will host Rocky Mountain College in the final home game of the season on October 3. The Senior Day celebration begins prior to the 1 p.m. first kick at Dumke Field.
