SALINA, Kan. – The Westminster men's soccer team couldn't overcome an early 2-0 deficit at No. 21 Kansas Wesleyan on Sunday evening, falling 3-2. The 15th-ranked Griffins (7-3) twice cut the deficit to one goal, but they never drew even and lost for the second consecutive game after a six-game winning streak.
Eduardo Barba put the host Coyotes (4-1) ahead 1-0 when he beat the Griffin defense and then the keeper in the 17th minute. The lead would grow to 2-0 in the 47th minute when Alex Chavez finished a shot to the far post on a pass from David Hernandez.
Dennis Sellis would get the Griffins on the board with his eighth goal of the season in the 56th minute to make it 2-1.
Chavez would tally the eventual game winner for KWU when he finished a cross from Cesar Torrico to put his squad ahead 3-1 in the 62nd minute.
Jonathan Parker would strike in the 87th minute for the Griffins, but that would be the end of the scoring.
Both teams would get plenty of chances as there were 31 shots in the game. Westminster attempted 15 of those shots while putting nine of those of frame. The Griffins would also take four corner kicks to just one by the host squad. The physical game featured 35 fouls with 22 of those being whistled on Kansas Wesleyan.
Parker would finish the night with a team-best four shots taken and three shots on goal.
Jace Maxfield attempted three shots while Sellis and
Matt Jimenez took two apiece.
Nathan Young suffered the loss at goalie despite his six saves.
Westminster will return to action on Saturday, September 25 when they host Great Falls at Dumke Field. The Frontier Conference opener for each team will begin at 1:30 p.m.
