Women’s Soccer Opens Frontier Conference Play against Great Falls

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's soccer team will open Frontier Conference action when they host Great Falls at Dumke Field on September 19. The Argonauts are the only team on the Griffins schedule this week and first kick is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Westminster enters the week with a 3-4-1 overall record. After dropping three straight games, Westminster rallied for two wins at home during last week's action. Westminster defeated No. 10 Point Loma Nazarene on September 10 and then took a 1-0 win over Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) in overtime on September 12.

Westminster is averaging 0.62 goals per game and recording 8.9 shots per contest. The Griffins have put 46.5% of their shots on frame this season and scored on seven percent of their total shots. They have attempted 26 corner kicks and posted one assist. On the defensive end, Westminster gives up one goal per game and allows the opposition 12 shots per outing. Griffin opponents have taken 38 corner kicks and put 49% of the shots on frame. They have posted 39 saves and turned away 83% of opposing shots on frame.

Heather Hillam leads the team with three goals and six points. Hillam has also attempted a team-best 18 shots and seven shots on goal. Sarah Swenson and Vanessa Jordan have each scored one goal this season for two points. Swenson and Brianna Wilson are tied for second on the team with nine shots apiece. Lisa Johnson has recorded the lone assist this season.

Lindsay Bekken has played every minute between the pipes for the Griffins this season. She has made 38 saves to rank 24th nationally and is second in the Frontier with a 0.92 GAA. Bekken has posted four shutouts and allowed just eight goals.

Scouting Great Falls
Great Falls comes to Salt Lake City to open Frontier Conference play with a 1-3 overall record. They defeated Jamestown College 2-1 on September 12 to snap a season opening three-game losing streak. The Argonauts have been outscored 18-7 this season. Jean Escobar leads the team with two goals and four points. Jenell Jackson has three points behind one goal and one assist. Megan Walburn has recorded 24 saves with an .828 save percentage and a 1.25 GAA.

Getting Their Money's worth
Westminster has played five overtime games in eight contests already in 2010. They have gone 2-2-1 in those games with all the goals coming within the first or final minute of the overtime session. Against Northwest Nazarene, Westminster scored with 48 second left. The loss at Northwood came on a goal just 50 seconds into the start of overtime while the loss at Saint Thomas came with just four second remaining in the second overtime. The Griffins claimed a 1-0 win when Vanessa Jordan scored late in the first overtime against Embry-Riddle (Ariz.). Westminster is 3-4-4 all-time in overtime games.

National Recognition
Lindsay Bekken was named the NAIA National Defensive Player of the Week the national office announced on September 14. Bekken became the first Griffin women's soccer player to win the national honor. For the week, Bekken recorded back-to-back shutouts last week as Westminster defeated No. 10 Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) on Sept. 10 and Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) on Sept. 12 both by scores of 1-0. She had four saves against Point Loma and a trio of blocks against Embry-Riddle. In 300 minutes played in the box, the sophomore goalie had 12 saves and allowed just one goal in a 1-0 loss to Saint Thomas (Fla.).

Conference Honors
Along with the national player of the week award, Bekken was also named the Frontier Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in her career. She previously won the award in October of 2009. Vanessa Jordan also received recognition from the Frontier Conference by being named the Offensive Player of the Week after her game-winning overtime goal against Embry-Riddle.

When it Counts
Sarah Swenson scored nine minutes into overtime against Northwest Nazarene for the fifth game winning goal of her career. Swenson has scored seven goals during her career and her last four goals have all been game winners. Her five game winners are tied for first in school history.

Record Chasing
Several players enter the season either in reach of school career records or as the current leader. Vanessa Jordan, Sarah Swenson, and Maddie Spere are all tied with six career assists which is tops in school history. Spere holds the record with 44 games started and is second in school history with nine goals scored. Rachel Watson has appeared in a school-best 63 games.

Unaffiliated Information
The Dakota Athletic Conference, Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference, and Frontier Conference will combine to offer one automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships in 2010. The top-4 teams in this group will advance to the Unaffiliated Conference Tournament with the winner receiving the automatic berth.

Looking Ahead
The Griffins travel to Caldwell, Idaho for two games against Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho. Westminster will face Eastern Oregon on September 25 at noon. The College of Idaho game is on September 26 at 1 p.m. Both games will be hosted by the College of Idaho.
