SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Jacob Hippensteel scored with 1:32 remaining in the first overtime to give Grand Canyon a 10-9 win over the Westminster men's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon. The loss snaps a four-game winning streak by the Griffins and lowers their record to 9-4 on the season.
The Griffins never led in the contest and trailed 5-1 midway through the second quarter. They would finally tie the game at 8-8 with 3:18 remaining in regulation, only to see Grand Canyon retake the lead less than a minute later.
Jacob Wayman forced overtime for the Griffins with his second goal of the game with 13 seconds left on the clock.
Westminster outshot Grand Canyon 58-32 in the game, but they went just 1-of-8 in extra-man opportunities. Grand Canyon also had a 34-33 advantage in ground balls while faceoff were even at nine apiece. Westminster only committed 10 turnovers while forcing 16 by the opponent.
Kellen Lynn and
Gian Sexsmith matched the two goals scored by Wayman to tie for the team lead. Lynn attempted a game-high 10 shots.
Matt Balk collected a team-best six ground balls and
Marshall Serzen added five ground balls and went 9-of-16 in faceoffs.
Dallas McLellan made 12 saves between the pipes.
Westminster continues the Baggataway Tournament with a game against tournament host Dominican on Sunday. The opening faceoff for that game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
