SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster men's lacrosse team got a goal from Kelly Lynn just 46 seconds into overtime to give them a 9-8 win over No. 7 Utah Valley on Saturday afternoon on Dumke Field. No. 9 Westminster improves to 5-2 on the season and 1-0 in RMLC action with the win.
The weather didn't cooperate for the Griffins home opener, but the home team played through the snow and rallied from an early 3-1 deficit. Westminster used a 6-1 run that spanned three quarters to open up a 7-4 lead.
Jake Arthur put the Griffins ahead 8-5 with 1:49 remaining in the third quarter, only to see Shawn Carter of UVU score with 38 second remaining in regulation to force overtime and run the visitors goal streak to three.
Arthur finished the game with two goals and five ground balls.
Andrew Gordon and
Dallin Hall also scored two goals apiece. Lynn,
Josh Condas, and
Gian Sexsmith added the other goals for the Griffins with one apiece. Westminster went 0-for-6 with a man advantage and committed 28 turnovers.
Dallas McLellan made 15 saves in goal and claimed the win.
Utah Valley won the shot battle 33-30 and ground balls 50-42. Carter led the Wolverines with three goals and Brian Tyrrell added two goals. Chad Frost and Austin Nielsen each recorded eight ground balls.
Westminster returns to action on Wednesday, March 17 when they host Utah at 4 p.m. on Dumke Field.
