SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's soccer team defeated Great Falls 2-0 in the Frontier Conference opener for both teams. The Griffins got two first half goals en route to a third consecutive win. It was also the second straight shutout for Westminster, marking the first time they had consecutive shutouts since 2007. Westminster is now 3-4 on the season and 1-0 in the Frontier Conference.
“We played great in the first half,” head coach
Tony LeBlanc said. “We were able to pressure like we wanted to and got two great goals in the first half.”
Sarah Swenson put Westminster on the board with her header from the top of the six in the game's 11th minute. It was the second goal in as many games for Swenson, both for game winners. This one came after Great Falls failed to clear the ball and Swenson won the 50/50 ball and headed home.
“We've been trying to get them to go hard once they get into the 18,” LeBlanc said. “Sarah did a nice job of keeping the play alive and getting the goal.”
Nicole Taylor gave the Griffins a 2-0 lead when she struck a shot from 20 yards out for her first goal of the season. Taylor's shot snuck inside the right post past Great Falls keeper Sam Davies.
Westminster keeper
Dayna Winter-Nolte recorded three saves in picking up her second shutout of the season. Westminster finished the game with a 21-3 advantage in total shots attempted and a 5-2 cushion in corner kicks.
Westminster is back in action on Friday, September 11 when they host Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) at Dumke Field. That game will kick off at 11:30 a.m. and is the first of three soccer games on the field that day.
