SALT LAKE CITY - The Westminster Griffins picked up their second win of the season on Sunday afternoon, with a 2-0 victory against Kansas Wesleyan. Although the Griffins started out with three straight losses in their first weekend of the season, they won both games this weekend to improve to 2-3 on the season.
The first half was played at a very high pace with both teams looking to make their mark on the game. While fending off some early opportunities from Kansas Wesleyan, the Griffins were creating some good chances for themselves. The Griffins earned six corner kicks in the first half. In the 27th minute,
Spencer Luczak smashed in a rebound from a corner kick taken by
Isaac Green, and gave the Griffins a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Having to deal with the heat and small injuries to a few players, the Griffins looked to put the game away early in the second half. In the 48th minute, Luczak found himself out on the wing isolated with a Kansas Wesleyan defender on him. He cut the ball inside from the wing, and fired a shot into the top right corner. This gave the Griffins a strong 2-0 lead.
Although the Griffins created many more chances throughout the rest of the game, including five more corner kicks, but they were unable to get a third goal. However, they were able to keep Kansas Wesleyan from creating anything dangerous in the second half.
Westminster will return to action on Friday, September 11 at 4:30 p.m. against Adams State College. That game will be played at Dumke Field to complete a full day of soccer action on the field.
