OAKLAND, Calif. – The Westminster women's soccer team used three second half goals to turn a 1-1 halftime tie into a 4-1 victory over Holy Name on Sunday afternoon.
Heather Hillam scored twice in the game, both in the second half, as the Griffins won their third consecutive game. The win evens the Griffins record at 7-7-1 on the season.
Holy Names started the scoring early on a Brittanie Perez goal in the game's seventh minute. Westminster didn't trail for long, getting a goal from
Maddie Spere in the 11th minute. The equalizer was the first goal of the season scored by Spere.
The game remained tied at 1-1 into the second half until Hillam took over. Hillam scored her fourth goal of the season and gave Westminster a 2-1 lead in the 66th minute. Then, in the 75th minute, Hillam struck again to put the Griffins on to 3-1.
Tanisia Wilson added her fourth goal of the season in the 77th minute to provide the final margin.
Westminster managed 21 shots in the game, with 16 coming after halftime. The Griffins put 11 of their 21 shots on target, forcing the Holy Names goalkeeper into seven saves. Hillam and
Alyssa Hill tied for a team-high four shots attempted.
Dayna Winter-Nolte made five saves, including four in the first half, to get her fifth win on the season in goal for the Griffins.
Westminster returns to action on Thursday, October 22 when they face Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana. That game begins the final three-game road trip against Frontier Conference teams to conclude the 2009 regular season.
