SALT LAKE CITY - Westminster men's basketball (9-13, 7-9 RMAC) made a season-high 13 three-pointers and led the entire second half of a 76-70 win over South Dakota School of Mines (7-14, 5-10 RMAC) on Thursday night at Behnken Field House.
Matt Kitzman scored a season-high 18 points, gonig 3-of-5 from long range to go along with six boards on the defensive end. After being out-rebounded by Colorado Mesa on Tuesday, Westminster dominated the glass with a season-high 44 rebounds and a plus-four rebounding edge.Â
Reme Torbert finished with 17 points and five boards and
Lewis Johnson connected on 3-of-6 three's and finished with 15 points.
Taylor Miller added 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting while
Brayden Johnson led the Griffins with four assists to go along with six boards, two steals and a block on the defensive end.
South Dakota Mines, which has now lost six of its last seven, began the week averaging the third-most three's per contest (8.7) in the RMAC and nearly doubled its season average with 14 made trey's in the game. Westminster's offense was able to keep pace through the first twenty minutes, however, and after taking the lead back just before halftime, the Griffins led the rest of the way and led by as many as 12 in the second half.
Lewis Johnson and
Reme Torbert each connected from long range twice in the opening stages of the second half to keep Westminster out in front and
Taylor Miller consistently kept the S.D. School of Mines defense on its heels en route to a 12-point lead midway through the period.
S.D. School of Mines was back within four at the 5:08 mark of the second half, but Westminster allowed just one Hardrockers' field goal over the ensuing 4:05 to craft an 11-point lead with just over a minute to play in regulation.
Despite another S.D. School of Mines three and a pair of ill-advised Westminster fouls in the dying stages, the Griffins finished off the six-point win to snap a five-game losing skid. Westminster is now 5-3 all-time against S.D. School of Mines, winning three straight and four of the last five.
Westminster will have the weekend off as it prepares for its penultimate conference road trip on the regular season beginning with a game against CSU Pueblo on Fri., Feb. 11, before taking on Adams State on Sat., Feb. 12.
