SALT LAKE CITY—
Reme Torbert scored 16 points and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds to lead Westminster in both stats against Adams State. The Griffins (6-8, 6-8 RMAC) were denied a comeback as the Grizzlies (6-6, 6-6 RMAC) held on for a 69-65 win.
The teams were pretty even across the scorebox. Westminster shot 42.4% from the field, scored 34 points in the paint and saw 27 points from the bench. The Griffins made made 7-27 from three and 8-13 from free throws. Adams State shot 48.2% from the field scoring 34 in the paint with 28 points from the bench, made 7-21 from three and 8-11 from free throws.
The Griffins trailed by just three points, 30-33, at the end of the half. The Grizzlies were leading by 13 with a little under three minutes left. Torbert scored from three to start a 12-2 run to finish the half.
The Griffins had momentum at the start of the game until a technical foul for hooking was called, after video review, on the Griffins. The Griffins started the game with a 9-2 run and had a seven-point lead over the visitors.
The Grizzlies scored 1-of-2 on the technical free throws then went on a 20-4 run that saw the Griffins without a basket for nearly six minutes.
Westminster was within 2-3 baskets through the second half and came within one basket of tying or taking the lead several times. The Griffins were within three, in the final minute, and had the ball, after a Grizzlies turnover, but the three didn't fall.
Torbert shot 5-12 from the filed making 3-8 from three and 3-4 from the charity stripe. He grabbed two offensive and six defensive rebounds for a season-high of eight. He had one steal and had a team-high three assists with
Matt Kitzman.
Brayden Johnson and
Taylor Miller each scored 12 points. Johnson grabbed five rebounds and was 5-10 from the field and 2-4 from free throws. Miller shot 4-10 from the field, made 1-4 from three and 3-3 from the stripe.
