GUNNISON, Colo.—The Westminster men's cross country opened the season at the Mountaineer/Cowboy Invite against fellow RMAC members Western Colorado, Colorado Mesa and Fort Lewis, and the College of Southern Idaho. The 8K race was hosted by Western Colorado at Van Tuyl Ranch.
Charlie Sweeney won the race in 25:45.6 and led the Mountaineers to a dominating team win with 17 points. The Griffins finished sixth with 165 points.
DJ Matthews and
Tony Nickerson were the Griffins top finishers. Matthews recorded a time finished 33
rd with a time of 28:12.4 and Nickerson posted a time of 28:18.8 to finish 35
th.
Riley McCarter came in 51
st,
Aiden Urban finished 59
th and
Thomas Maxfield finished 69
th to round out the top five finishers.
The Griffins will next race at the Idaho Milks Product CSI Classic, hosted by College of Southern Idaho, in Twin Falls, Idaho, on Oct. 2.
