Box Score LAKELAND, Flo.--A three-point lead slipped away from the Griffins in the fourth period as the Griffins (2-3, 0-0 RMAC) fell in overtime to Florida Southern College (3-3, 0-0 SSC), 13-14.
The Griffins scored five first-period goals for a two-point lead.Â
Mitchell Senour won the opening face off and raced up the field scoring the first goal of the game 10 seconds in.Â
Kolton Atkinson added to the tally a couple minutes later, assisted by
Blake Gross.Â
Dylan Tuor restored Westminster's lead after the Mocassions scored twice to tie the game.Â
Nick Marcy and
Spencer Whinery both scored to finish the period and give the Griffins a 5-3 lead.
The Griffins scored thee more in the second period to increase their lead by one. Marcy scored his second goal and assisted a goal by
Blake Gross.Â
Cole Flinders scored with 26 seconds left to close out the half.
The third period was a good old fashioned shootout with both teams scoring five. Westminster scored three in a row for its largest lead of the game, 11-6. Atkinson added three more to his first period tally, while
Dylan Brauer and Jake Taylor both scored their first of the game. Marcy assisted Brauer's goal and two of Atkinsons'.Â
Spencer Whinery assisted on Atkinson and Flinders assisted Taylor on a man-up opportunity.
The Griffins were shutout and the home side came back scoring three to send the game to overtime where they scored to defeat Westminster, 13-14.
Sean Edwards played between the pipes for the Griffins. He faced 27 shots and made 13 saves for a .481 save percentage.
Marcy and Atkinson led the Griffin offense. Marcy recorded seven points with two goals and five assists. Atkinson tallied four goals.
Seven Griffins each picked up three ground balls, eight grabbed two each and three grabbed a single ground ball for 34 in the game. The team recorded 11 caused turnovers with Griffins causing two each and five causing one.
The Griffins face off with University of Tampa in three days, Saturday, March 16.
