Men's Soccer Plays To Scoreless Draw

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah--The Westminster men's soccer team (6-3-2, 4-1-2 RMAC) recorded its sixth shutout of the season in a scoreless draw with Colorado School of Mines (7-2-2, 5-0-2 RMAC).

"It was an exciting game and a great RMAC battle," Head Coach Josh Pittman said. "Both teams defended well and had some great goalkeeping."

The Orediggers controlled more of the first half forcing the Griffins to defend deep in their halves. Mines out shot Westminster 9-3 and won the corner kick battle 3-1. The defense played well and only three shots were on goal which goalkeeper Will Desantis saved.

During the first half the Griffins struggled to maintain possession after winning the ball from the visitors. The Griffins kept the ball better in the second half and made more of an impact reducing the number of shots faced by nearly half.

Westminster dug its heels in for overtime. They defended three corner kicks but only allowed one shot in the first ten minute period. Desantis made a pair of saves in the 107th minute to keep the game level and helped earn a point with a 0-0 tie.

Westminster took seven shots with three on goal and faced seventeen with six on goal. Desantis made six saves, four in regulation and two in overtime.

Danny Darelli came close to scoring in the 35th minute. Kaden Amano dribbled into the penalty box and passed a ball to an open Darelli 12 yards out from the right post. Darelli controlled the ball and shot but Orediggers' goalkeeper Drew Johnson was quick off his line and was able to block the shot.

The Griffins nearly scored in the second half but agains was denied by Johnson when a fortuitus bounce of the ball of his left shin kept the ball out of the goal.

Desantis made two gigantic saves for the Griffins, one in the first half and one in the second. A corner kick in the first half pinballed around in front of goal and nearly crossed the line but Desantis smothered it inches before crossing the goal line.

Desanits made another goal line save in the final two minutes of the second overtime period to deny Michael Sprauer. Sprauer got behind his defender for an open header six yards out from the right post. Desantis's quickly reacted and to make a diving save at the low right post preserving the shutout.

"We were unlucky not to score," Pittman said. "We survived a flurry of set pieces near the end of the game and Mines were probably a little unlucky not to score as well."

The Griffins will be back on the pitch Sunday at 12:00 pm to face South Dakota School of Mines.
