Griffins Notebook: WLAX Hosts Regis and UCCS

Second Half Comeback to Defeat Pueblo
Westminster's women's lacrosse team improved to 3-1 in conference play after defeating CSU-Pueblo.  The Griffins were down, 10-6, minutes into the second half.  Brenlee Fordham scored to kick start a 9-2 run and a three-point lead with a little over five minutes remaining.  Pueblo scored two goals in the final minute of play.  Audree Erekson won the final draw control and sealed the win for Westminster, 15-14.
 
Westminster is 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), tied for third with Colorado Mesa.
 
Fordham was perfect shooting five times and scoring a career and season high five goals.  She also picked up a career high four ground balls.
 
Mikala Anderson came off the bench and set a season high 13 saves to help secure the win.
 
Hosting Regis and UCCS
Westminster hosts Regis University on Thursday, March 29, at 4 p.m. and University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on Saturday, March 31, at 11 a.m.    The games will be broadcast on the RMAC Network, with play-by-play from David Winkworth.  Live stats will also be available online.  Links can be found on the women's lacrosse schedule webpage.
 
Tickets can be purchased online in advance of the game, or at the gate the day off the game.
 
Scouting Regis:
Regis are 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the RMAC.  They won their last four games, three against conference opponents and an overtime win over #22 Grand Valley State.
  • Regis averages 18.33 goals per game and allows 9.67 goals per game
  • Shots on goal percentage .819, averaging 34.3 shots per game.
  • Westminster is 0-2 against the Rangers
  • Key Players:
    • Three players have contributed at least 40 points: Ali Vanek (33 goas, 7 assists), Sarah Myres (31 goals, 17 assists) and Kyleigh Peoples (22 goals, 19 assists).
    • Jada Bonner is first in the RMAC with 30 caused turnovers and leads her with 57 draw control wins, second in the RMAC.
    • Elle Crawdord has played in eight games and recorded a .481 save percentage.  She has allowed 56 goals and made 52 saves.
Scouting UCCS:
UCCS are 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the RMAC.  They won their last three games, two against conference opponents.
  • UCCS averages 15.08 goals per game and allows 10.17 goals per game
  • Shots on goal percentage .774, averaging 32.8 shots per game.
  • Westminster is 1-0 against UCCS
  • Key Players:
    • Brianna Martinez leads the team with 42 points (26 goals, 16 assists).  Natalie Church has 38 points (24 goals, 14 assists) and Vanessa Nelson has 35 points (33 goals, 2 assists)
    • Church leads the team with 72 draw controls and averages 6.00 per game.
    • Ellie O'Brien has caused 30 turnovers and picked up 38 ground balls in 12 games.
    • Emma Becker has faced 194 shots and saved 80.  She has recorded a .412 save percentage. 
About the Griffins

The Griffins finished 2017 with a 7-6 overall record and a 5-4 conference.  Finishing in fifth place, Westminster made it into the conference championships but suffered defeat to Fort Lewis, 9-12, in the first game.  The Griffins were picked to finish fourth in the preseason coaches' poll. 

Westminster returns 16 players from last season's squad.  "The experience and leadership from these players is helping the freshmen integrate and will help us keep the momentum from last season," head coach Nikonia Harding said.
 
Scoring Duo
Adams and Ingman are the team's leading scorers.  Ingman leads is third in the RMAC in shots per game (7.00) and is second for goals (4.00) and third for points per game (5.00).  She leads the team with 38 points from 30 goals and eight assists.
Adams is second on the team with 31 points from 27 goals and four assists.  In the conference she is third in goals per game (3.67), eight in points per game (4.33) and tenth in shots per game (5.67).

Support in the Attack
Katie Hendershott and Fordham each have 17 points.  Hendershott has scored seven goals and assisted 10 goals.  Fordham has thirteen goals and four assists.

Picking up Ground Balls and Causing Turnovers
Adams and Daisy Mele are first and second in the RMAC for gathering ground balls. Katie has picked up 34 and averages 5.67 per game. Mele has 25 and averages 4.17 per game.  Mele and Adams are tied for seventh in the conference with 14 caused turnovers, averaging 2.33 per game.

Draw Control Winners
Four Griffins have recorded double-digit draw controls.  Erekson leads the group with 47 wins and is first in the conference, averaging 6.50 wins per game.  Ambert Allison has won 23, Adams has 18 and Daisy Mele has recorded 12 draw control wins.

In the Cage
Taylor Heckking has the third best save percentage (.469) and the third most saves per game (9.00) in the conference.  Hekking has started five of Westminster's six games.  She has faced 125 shots and made 60 saves.
Looking Ahead

Westminster travels to Colorado Mesa on March 14 and finishes the season with two games at home against Fort Lewis, April 27, and Adams State, April 29.
