Griffins Fall in RMAC Championship, but Historic Season Marks New Era for Westminster Lacrosse

Game Breakdown

First Quarter

Regis wasted no time establishing control in the championship game, racing out to a 5-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Maggie Schipfer opened the scoring at 12:06 off a Krista Munsinger assist, before Rome Villani and Aubrey Benton pushed the lead to 3-0 within the next few minutes. Evie Tanella converted a man-up free-position goal at 5:13, and Schipfer added her second of the quarter off a Tanella assist at 4:40 to send Westminster into the second period down five.

Second Quarter

Regis picked up right where they left off, extending the lead to 11-0 by halftime. Tanella opened the period with an unassisted goal at 14:02, and Kyla Bieker added back-to-back goals — a man-up score off a Rome Villani assist at 11:03, then a second off a Lexie Springman assist at 9:27 — to push the lead to 8-0. Lexie Springman added a free-position goal at 8:33, prompting Westminster to make a goalkeeping change, bringing Sienna Garcia in for Kaelyn Hart. Maggie Schipfer added her third goal of the game off a Tanella assist at 5:50, and Aubrey Benton capped the half with a man-up goal off a Springman assist at 2:22. Westminster headed to halftime trailing 11-0.

Third Quarter

The Griffins came out with renewed energy in the third, outscoring Regis 3-0 to cut the deficit to 11-3. Lilliana Montano got Westminster on the board at 12:35 with an unassisted goal, and Jessie Giacomazzi converted a free-position shot at 9:58 to make it 11-2. Montano added her second of the game on another free-position goal at 5:37, giving the Griffins some momentum heading into the fourth.

Fourth Quarter

Regis quickly responded to Westminster's third-quarter push, scoring three straight to extend the lead to 14-3. Aubrey Benton off an Evie Tanella assist at 13:06, followed by a Rome Villani man-up goal off a Benton assist at 12:30, and Tanella's third goal of the game at 5:55 put the championship out of reach. Westminster did not go quietly, however — Adison Bendorf converted back-to-back man-up goals, the first off a Lilliana Montano assist at 4:32 and the second off an Anabelle Kugler assist at 1:07, to bring the final score to 14-5.
