SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College Athletic Department is saddened with the news that former men's lacrosse player Matt Hearn passed away in a climbing accident late last week. Hearn played on the Westminster men's lacrosse team in 2012 and 2013 before graduating from the college in 2014.
Â
"The Griffins athletic family is mourning the loss of men's lacrosse alumnus Matt Hearn," Westminster Director of Athletics
Shay Wyatt stated. "We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Hearn family at this difficult time. Matt's memory and impact on his teammates and coaches will not be forgotten."
Â
Hearn played in 26 games for the Griffins before injuries cut his lacrosse career short.
Â
"Matt was a heart and soul competitor whose career was cut short by the concussions that were a by-product of that zest for the hazardous path to the goal," Westminster men's lacrosse head coach
Mason Goodhand said of Hearn. "It was his success at applying his work ethic and positive attitude to his professional life that I laud to freshman each year."
Â
Hearn was working as a marketing consultant at KUTV, the local CBS affiliate in Salt Lake City. He also was the offensive coordinator for the East High School boy's lacrosse team this past season where he was awarded the Utah Lacrosse Assistant Coach of the Year.
Â
The Westminster men's lacrosse team will honor Hearn by wearing a decal on their helmet during the upcoming athletic year.
