SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's soccer team kept a few streaks alive with a 1-0 win over Saint Martin's on Sunday afternoon at Dumke Field.
Westminster (3-0) won for the sixth straight time dating back to last season to set a new school record. They have now recorded a shutout in the first three games of the season.
They took the lead on Sunday in just the second minute of action.
Madison Roemer changed directions in the box and blasted a shot into the upper left corner of the goal from the right side of the area. The goal came at the 1:38 mark and is the fourth-fastest goal in team history. For Roemer, it was her third goal of the season and third game-winner.
The team's best chance the rest of the game came in the 17th minute when Roemer hit a shot from 35 yards out and the left angle that bounced off the cross bar and away from danger. That was one of 21 shots taken in the game by the Griffins.
Westminster held Saint Martin's (0-3) to just two shots and keeper
Breanna Empey made just one save to notch her third win – and second shutout – of the season. The Griffins finished with 11 of their shot attempts on goal and took eight corner kicks.
Roemer finished the game with five shots and three on goal.
Heidi Lorschider also got five shots off while
Tiana Cerciello and
Abigail Black had three shots apiece.
The Griffins will look to start the season 4-0 for the third straight season when they host Dixie State on Tuesday. The game will begin at 4 p.m. from Dumke Field and tickets are available at
