Men's Lacrosse Notes – April 13

THE AGENDA
The Westminster men's lacrosse takes begins a three-game homestand to close the regular season on Saturday when they host Colorado Mesa at Dumke Field. The key Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tilt features the top two teams in the conference and will begin at 1 p.m.
 
Tickets for the game are available by visiting WestminsterGriffins.com/tickets. Fans are encouraged to get their tickets in advance. Also be advised that traffic around Westminster College will be busy on Saturday due to road closures for the Salt Lake City Marathon.

Saturday's game will be broadcast live on Griffins TV. David Winkworth (play-by-play) and Scott Kellner (analyst) will call the action. Coverage begins at 12:50 p.m. with the Pepsi Pregame Show. ABOUT THE GRIFFINS
Westminster enters Saturday with a 6-1 overall record and they lead the RMAC with a 5-0 mark in conference games. They have secured a spot in the inaugural RMAC Tournament and will be the tournament host with a win on Saturday. The Griffins will play their first home game that counts toward their record on Saturday after defeating a pair of MCLA teams at home earlier in the year.
 
ON OFFENSE
The Griffins rank second in the RMAC by scoring 12.43 goals per game and they have scored in double figures in each of their past three outings. The team averages 42.57 shots per game with 25.71 of those attempts on cage.
 
Josh Holland leads the team with 24 goals and 31 points. He ranks second in the RMAC by scoring 3.43 goals per game – a total that would rank ninth in the NCAA – while his 4.43 points per game is third in the league. Holland leads the conference by taking 11.14 shots per outing. Thomas Sarjeant leads the team with 17 assists and leads the RMAC at 2.43 assists per game which would be eighth in the NCAA. His 4.00 points per game are fourth-best in the conference.
 
ON DEFENSE
Westminster opponents have scored 64 goals during the season and they are taking 33.3 shots per contest. The opposition get 62.2 percent of their shots on cage. The Griffins have won 61.5 percent of faceoffs and they collect 28.86 ground balls per game. They are second in the RMAC by getting 8.0 caused turnovers per game.
 
Jake Berard has won 63.3 percent of the 128 faceoffs he has taken. That ranks second in the RMAC among players that have taken 40 percent of their teams opportunities and would place 13th in the NCAA. Berard is also second in the conference by getting 4.83 ground balls per game with Chase Flinders third at 3.43 per game. Elias Fairman leads the Griffins with seven caused turnovers and is seventh in the RMAC at 1.0 CTs per game.
 
IN CAGE
Westminster sits second in the conference with a 9.06 goals-against-average and .559 save percentage. The team is making 11.57 saves per game. Philip Cannell has started all seven games in goal and posted an 8.35 GAA to rank second in the conference and would sit 14th in the NCAA. He has five wins and made 70 saves with his .565 save percentage which would be 10th-best in the NCAA.
 
SPECIAL TEAMS
Westminster has gone 9 of 25 on the man-advantage this season and are third in the conference at 36.0 percent. Opponents have gone 7 of 20 with the man-advantage to rank the Griffins fourth in the RMAC by killing 65.0 percent. Holland has scored a team-best four man-up goals while Cole Flinders and Troy Vance each have two.
 
RECOGNITION FOR HOLLAND
The RMAC named Josh Holland the offensive player of the week on Tuesday for his play in two road wins at Adams State and CSU-Pueblo last week. Holland scored 10 goals with two assists during the week. He became the seventh player in school history to score 100 career goals against Adams State and then attempted a school record 15 shots against CSU-Pueblo. This is his second player of the week award this season.
 
RMAC TOURNAMENT
The inaugural RMAC Men's Lacrosse Tournament will be played on May 6-7 at the home site of the regular season champion. Westminster is currently leading the conference and will secure the right to host the tournament with a win on Saturday. As of now, the Griffins are the only team to have clinched a spot in the four-team field.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Westminster will close the regular season with a pair of home games next weekend. They will host Adams State on April 22 and 4 p.m. before a 1 p.m. game with CSU-Pueblo on April 24. Tickets for both games are available now by visiting WestminsterGriffins.com/tickets.
