Men's Lacrosse Notes – March 30

THE AGENDA
The Westminster men's lacrosse team begins the final stretch of the regular season with a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game against Rockhurst on Sunday at 11 a.m. The game will be played at Walker Field on the Colorado Mesa University campus in Grand Junction, Colo.

ABOUT THE GRIFFINS
Westminster enters Sunday's game at 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in RMAC play. They currently sit in first place in the conference standings with six games to play. The Griffins are 1-0 in neutral site games this season, defeating Rockhurst on March 19.
 
ON OFFENSE
The Griffins average 12.0 goals per game and are tied for the conference lead in that category. They also get a conference-best 6.75 assists per game and lead the RMAC at 18.75 points per game. The team attempts 42.0 shots per outing with 61.3 percent of them on cage.
 
Josh Holland and Cole Flinders have each scored 11 goals to lead the team. They are tied for second in the RMAC by averaging 2.75 goals per game. Thomas Sarjeant has a team-best 11 assists and 16 points. He leads the conference at 2.75 assists per game and is tied for second by scoring 4.0 points per game. Holland has taken a team-best 41 shots with 19 shots on goal.
 
ON DEFENSE
Westminster surrenders 8.75 goals per game with the opposition attempting 34.0 shots per game. Opponents put 61.0 percent of those shots on cage. Westminster is forcing 14.25 turnovers per outing and they are second in the RMAC by averaging 8.0 caused turnovers per contest. The Griffins lead the league with a .646 faceoff percentage. They are clearing at 82.7 percent and holding opponents to 75.6 percent.
 
Jake Berard is winning .683 percent of faceoffs and would rank fifth in the NCAA if Westminster players were eligible. Berard has 43 wins at X and also leads the team with 18 ground balls. He is second in the RMAC by picking up 4.5 ground balls per game. Elias Fairman has a team-best five caused turnovers and is fifth in the conference at 1.25 CTs per game.
 
IN CAGE
Westminster has recorded an 8.75 goals-against-average through four games to lead the RMAC. The team in third in the conference by making 12.0 saves per game and their .578 save percentage in second in the league.
 
Philip Cannell has started all four games in goal with a 7.72 GAA to lead the RMAC. He has three wins and made 42 saves. Cannell is third in the conference by making 10.5 saves per game and ranks second with a .600 save percentage.
 
SPECIAL TEAMS
Westminster has scored on four of their 15 man-up opportunities and rank third in the RMAC at 26.7 percent. They are fourth in the league by killing off 63.6 percent of opponent extra-man chances. Josh Holland and Cole Flinders have scored two man-up goals apiece to lead the team.
 
LEAD EARLY
The Griffins have taken control of games this season in the first quarter. They have outscored opponents 16-4 in the first 15 minutes of action and they are 3-0 when leading after the first quarter this season. Westminster has continued that fast start by outscoring opponents 18-9 in the second quarter and they have led at halftime of all four games.
 
CLIMBING THE CHARTS
The duo of Elias Fairman and Josh Holland are currently ranked in the top-10 in school history in both points and goals. Fairman became the sixth player in school history to score 100 goals with his tally against Rockhurst on March 19. He also sits seventh all-time with 138 career points. Holland is five goals away from 100 in his career and he ranks 10th in team history with 128 career points. Jake Berard is third in team history with 171 ground balls and second with his .601 faceoff percentage.
 
RMAC TOURNAMENT
The top four teams in the final RMAC standings will qualify for the first-ever RMAC Men's Lacrosse Tournament. The event will be held on May 6-7 at the home site of the regular season champion. The Griffins currently lead the conference race at 2-0 as they look to host the tournament in their first year in the league.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Westminster is back on the road next weekend for a pair of RMAC games in Colorado. They will face Adams State on April 8 in Alamosa, Colo. before playing at CSU-Pueblo on April 10 in Pueblo, Colo.
