Men's Lacrosse Notes – March 2

THE AGENDA
The Westminster men's lacrosse team will begin a stretch of four games in six days played in four different states this weekend. The Griffins will begin the busy slate on Friday at Whittier College starting at 4 p.m. MT / 3 p.m. PT. They will then face San Diego State from the MCLA in an exhibition game on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. MT / 1:30p.m PT in Henderson, Nev.
 
3 THINGS
>This first season in the RMAC is the 10th season of men's lacrosse at Westminster
>The Griffins 12-7 win at Colorado Mesa on February 20 was the first-ever RMAC men's lacrosse game
>Westminster defeated Utah Valley, 16-7, in an exhibition game at Dumke Field on February 27

ABOUT THE GRIFFINS
Westminster will enter the game at 2-0 on the season and leading the RMAC with a 1-0 mark in league play. They have played both of their games on the road to start the season. The Griffins are averaging 15.0 goals per game while taking 41.5 shots. The opposition is averaging 8.5 goals per contest while attempting 33.0 shots per game.
 
ON OFFENSE
Josh Holland and Cole Flinders have scored eight goals apiece to lead the team. They are tied for second in the RMAC by averaging 4.0 goals per game. They have each scored two goals on the man-advantage. Thomas Sarjeant leads the team with 11 points and nine assists. Sarjeant leads the RMAC in assists at 4.5 per game and ranks third by getting 5.5 points per game.
 
ON DEFENSE
In holding the opposition to 8.5 goals per game, Westminster is also forcing 12.0 turnovers per game. The Griffins have been credited with 18 caused turnovers and been called for eight penalties. Elias Fairman leads the team with four caused turnovers while Chase Flinders, Brian Dejesus, and Blake Bruner had two each.
 
IN CAGE
After all three goalies played in the opener at Notre Dame de Namur, Philip Cannell went the distance at Colorado Mesa. The freshman made 14 saves to improve to 2-0 on the year. Cannell currently leads the RMAC with a 6.15 goals-against-average. He is second in the conference with his .600 save percentage and third at 7.5 saves per game.
 
FACEOFF FACTS
Westminster has been dominate at the faceoff-X this season having won 38 of 52 attempts in two games. The .731 winning percentage leads the RMAC. Jake Berard leads the team with 30 wins and won .750 percent of his total attempts. Theo Davis has won 7 of 11. Berard leads the team with 13 ground balls and Chase Flinders has eight.
 
SPECIAL TEAMS
The Griffins scored three times with the man-advantage at Colorado Mesa and they now have four man-up goals on the season. They have converted 33.3 percent of their extra-man opportunities with Josh Holland and Cole Flinders scoring two each. Griffin opponents have scored three times on eight extra-man chances.
 
AWARD WINNERS
After leading the Griffins to a 12-7 win at then-No. 15 Colorado Mesa on February 20, Josh Holland and Philip Cannell were honored by the RMAC. Holland was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring five goals with one assist. Cannell took Defensive Player of the Week honors with his 14 saves and .667 save percentage. This was the first-ever conference weekly award given by the RMAC in men's lacrosse.
 
CLIMBING THE CHARTS
The duo of Elias Fairman and Josh Holland are currently ranked in the top-10 in school history in both points and goals. Fairman is sixth all-time with 99 goals and tied for seventh with 137 points. Holland is close behind with 92 goals – seventh in team history – and his 123 points are 10th-most. Jake Berard is third in team history with 166 ground balls and second with his .603 faceoff percentage.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Westminster will continue its four games in four states span on March 8 at Arizona of the MCLA in Tucson, Ariz. The trip comes to an end with a home game against MCLA foe Arizona State on March 10 at Dumke Field. That game will begin at 4 p.m. MT.
