ABOUT THE GRIFFINSWestminster started the 2016 season with an 18-10 win at Notre Dame de Namur last Saturday. The Griffins scored the first eight goals of the game and eventually led 16-3 early in the third quarter. They took 43 shots in the game with 28 of them on cage.
ON OFFENSECole Flinders led the team with five goals on five shots in the win at NDNU.
Thomas Sarjeant scored a team-high nine points after tying the school record with seven assists. The Griffins also got multiple goals from
Josh Holland,
Pace Cranney, and
Dalton Tuor.
ON DEFENSEThe Griffins held NDNU to 10 goals in the game and just two in the first half. They forced 15 turnovers in the win with 14 caused turnovers. Blake Brunner,
Elias Fairman, and
Brian Dejesus were each credited with a team-high two caused turnovers.
IN CAGEAll three goalies on the roster saw time at NDNU.
Philip Cannell got the start and earned the win with one save and three goals allowed in 37:30 minutes. Conner McFarland played 14:29 with a team-bets four saves.
Ian Sime closed the final 8:01 of action with two stops.
FACEOFF FACTSJake Berard dominated at the faceoff-X by winning 16 of his 19 attempts. That helped the team win 75.9 percent of the 29 total faceoffs.
Theo Davis was 5 of 9 at X and
Ryan Coffelt won his only attempt. Berard also led the team with eight ground balls while
Chase Flinders and
Kolton Atkinson had five and four respectively.
SPECIAL TEAMSWestminster scored on 1 of 2 extra-man opportunities. They goal came from
Josh Holland in the fourth quarter. At the other end, Westminster allowed a pair of goals in three chances playing a man down.
LEADING AFTER 3With its win at NDNU when leading 16-4 at the end of the third quarter, Westminster improved its all-time record to 110-0 when leading after three quarters. They also extended their streak to 22 straight road when wins when leading at halftime.
CLIMBING THE CHARTSThe duo of
Elias Fairman and
Josh Holland are currently ranked in the top-10 in school history in both points and goals. Fairman is sixth all-time with 98 goals and tied for eighth with 135 points. Holland is close behind with 87 goals – tied for eighth in team history – and his 117 points are 10th-most.
Jake Berard is fourth in team history with 161 ground balls and second with his .600 faceoff percentage.
