Men's Lacrosse Notes – February 17

THE AGENDA
The Westminster men's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday when they play at No. 15 Colorado Mesa in the first-ever Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game. The historic contest will begin at 2 p.m. MT at Walker Field in Grand Junction, Colo.

Saturday's game at Colorado Mesa will be broadcast live on Griffins TV with CMU producing the content. The game can be seen in the new Game Central portal at portal.stretchinternet.com/Westminster. Griffins TV is available online and is optimized for mobile devices. There will also be live stats available during the game at sidearmstats.com/coloradomesa/mlax.

ABOUT THE GRIFFINS
Westminster started the 2016 season with an 18-10 win at Notre Dame de Namur last Saturday. The Griffins scored the first eight goals of the game and eventually led 16-3 early in the third quarter. They took 43 shots in the game with 28 of them on cage.
 
ON OFFENSE
Cole Flinders led the team with five goals on five shots in the win at NDNU. Thomas Sarjeant scored a team-high nine points after tying the school record with seven assists. The Griffins also got multiple goals from Josh Holland, Pace Cranney, and Dalton Tuor.
 
ON DEFENSE
The Griffins held NDNU to 10 goals in the game and just two in the first half. They forced 15 turnovers in the win with 14 caused turnovers. Blake Brunner, Elias Fairman, and Brian Dejesus were each credited with a team-high two caused turnovers.
 
IN CAGE
All three goalies on the roster saw time at NDNU. Philip Cannell got the start and earned the win with one save and three goals allowed in 37:30 minutes. Conner McFarland played 14:29 with a team-bets four saves. Ian Sime closed the final 8:01 of action with two stops.
 
FACEOFF FACTS
Jake Berard dominated at the faceoff-X by winning 16 of his 19 attempts. That helped the team win 75.9 percent of the 29 total faceoffs. Theo Davis was 5 of 9 at X and Ryan Coffelt won his only attempt. Berard also led the team with eight ground balls while Chase Flinders and Kolton Atkinson had five and four respectively.
 
SPECIAL TEAMS
Westminster scored on 1 of 2 extra-man opportunities. They goal came from Josh Holland in the fourth quarter. At the other end, Westminster allowed a pair of goals in three chances playing a man down.
 
LEADING AFTER 3
With its win at NDNU when leading 16-4 at the end of the third quarter, Westminster improved its all-time record to 110-0 when leading after three quarters. They also extended their streak to 22 straight road when wins when leading at halftime.
 
CLIMBING THE CHARTS
The duo of Elias Fairman and Josh Holland are currently ranked in the top-10 in school history in both points and goals. Fairman is sixth all-time with 98 goals and tied for eighth with 135 points. Holland is close behind with 87 goals – tied for eighth in team history – and his 117 points are 10th-most. Jake Berard is fourth in team history with 161 ground balls and second with his .600 faceoff percentage.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Next weekend sees the Griffins host Utah Valley from the MCLA in the home opener. The game from Dumke Field will begin at 1 p.m. MT. Tickets for the game, and all home games, are available now by visiting WestminsterGriffins.com/tickets.
