No. 7 Griffins Close Regular Season at Colorado Mesa on Friday

SALT LAKE CITY – The No. 7 Westminster men's lacrosse team will conclude the regular season on Friday when they travel to Grand Junction, Colo., to face Colorado Mesa at Walker Field. The final game of the season for the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference champions will begin at 7 p.m. (MT) against the NCAA D-II team from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

The game will be shown live on the Colorado Mesa channel on the America One Sports Network. The fee for viewing the game is $8. There will also be live stats available for the game. Links for both live features are available at WestminsterGriffins.com/live.
 
Griffins Notebook
Westminster enters the season finale at 9-3 overall this season and they won their first RMLC Division I title by going a perfect 5-0 in league games. The Griffins are riding a six-game winning streak and they have gone 4-2 in road games this season. They jumped five spots to No. 7 in this week's Under Armour MCLA Coaches' Poll that was released on Tuesday.
 
About the Offense
The Griffins are averaging 15.00 goals per game on the season and they have scored in double figures in all but one game. They are taking 44.4 shots per outing with 60 percent of those attempts on goal. Westminster has 110 assists as a team to notch an assist on 61.1 percent of their goals scored. They are 12-of-29 (41.4 percent) in man-up opportunities and they commit 16.17 turnovers per game. They also have clearing percentage of 85.3 percent and are winning 54.9 percent of faceoffs.
 
About the Defense
Griffin opponents are scoring 9.17 goals per game while they attempt 32.8 shots per game. Westminster has held six opponents to eight goals or less. The opposition puts 55.6 percent of their shots on goal and they have tallied 47 assists for a 42.7 assist percentage. Opponents have gone 11-of-34 (32.4 percent) on the man-advantage while posting a 71.2 clear percentage. The Griffins force with 18.58 turnovers per game with 99 caused turnovers.
 
Leaders
Kyle Postler is tops on the team with 31 goals after scoring eight in the two games last week. Josh Holland has found the back of the net 29 times. Thomas Sarjeant has a team-best 28 assists while scoring 27 goals to lead the Griffins with 55 points. Ryan Coffelt has picked up 65 ground balls with 92 faceoff wins. Jake Berard wins 56.2 percent of his faceoff attempts and Spencer Huso leads the way with 12 caused turnovers. Erik Gronseth leads all net minders with 85 saves.
 
About Colorado Mesa
Colorado Mesa steps out of NCAA play to face the Griffins at 7-3 on the season. They have gone 3-1 at home during the year and have won three of their past four games overall. The Mavericks average 14.6 goals per game while allowing 10.7 goals per game to the opposition. David Solomon leads the team in goals (20) and assists (22). Zach Weaver plays the majority of minutes in cage and he has made 89 saves with a .489 save percentage.
 
Against the Opposition
The Griffins are winless in two previous meetings with Colorado Mesa. They last played in 2013 when CMU defeated the Griffins, 18-7, at Dumke Field. The last meeting in Grand Junction was a 10-4 win by the Mavericks in 2011.
 
Postler Player of the Week
Postler was named the Inside Lacrosse MCLA Division I Player of the Week on Tuesday. Postler led the Griffins to their first-ever win over then-No. 5 Brigham Young with a career-high five goals and two assists. He is the first Griffin to ever receive the honor.
 
Atop the Scoring Charts
Postler leads the team with 31 goals and he ranks second on the squad with 22 assists and 53 points. He now has 249 points in his Westminster career and he became the school's all-time leader in that category with two points at Cal Poly on March 9. Postler is also the Westminster career leader with 127 assists and he ranks fourth in team history with 122 career goals. The senior has scored multiple goals in 11 games this season with at least one assist in 11 outings. He has taken 72 shots (45 on goal) and scored three man-up goals and three game-winning goals.
 
Sarj in Charge
Freshman Thomas Sarjeant is having a stellar start to his collegiate career as he currently leads the Griffins with 55 points and 28 assists. He currently ranks third in the RMLC in total assists while leading the league in assists per game. Sarjeant is also second in the conference in points per contest. He has tallied at least one goal in every game this season with an assist in 11 contests. Sarjeant has scored three man-up goals with 58 shots (39 on goal) and 12 ground balls.
 
Balanced Scoring Attack
Six Griffins have scored double-digit goals so far this season with Postler and Holland leading the way with 31 and 29 goals respectively. Sarjeant has scored 27 goals and Elias Fairman has added 22 goals. Eric Crosby has scored 21 times while Troy Vance had found the net 18 times. A total of 16 different players have scored at least one goal and 10 having scored five or more.
 
Faceoff Duo
Berard and Coffelt have taken the majority of the faceoff attempts for the Griffins this season and they help the team to a .546 winning percentage. Coffelt has 92 faceoff wins and .561 winning percentage while Berard had 82 wins for his .562 winning percentage. The duo are also tops on the team in ground balls with Coffelt getting 65 and Berard 44. Berard has added some offensive presence to his game with five goals and three assists on the year.
 
Gronseth in Cage
Erik Gronseth has been the primary goalie for the Griffins this season having played 556 minutes in cage. The junior has recorded an 8-3 record and 10.47 goals-against-average. He has made a team-best 85 saves with a .467 save percentage. Gronseth made 17 stops in the win at Boise State on March 1 and he has five games this season with at least eight saves.
 
RMLC Tournament
Westminster is the No. 1-seed at the upcoming RMLC Tournament that will be held on May 1-2 at Kittredge Field in Boulder, Colo. The Griffins will face the No. 4-seed – presumably Brigham Young – at 7 p.m. (MT) on May 1. The other semifinal contest pits second-seeded Colorado against third-seeded Colorado State. The championship game will be played at 4:30 p.m. on May 2.
 
MLCA National Championship
The 2015 MCLA National Championship returns to Irvine, Calif. for the second-straight year. The 16-team tournament begins on May 11-16 with the first two rounds being played on the fields at Concordia University. The semifinals and championship will be played inside Chapman Stadium in Orange, Calif.
