Griffin Women Close Regular Season with Two Road Games

SALT LAKE CITY – The No. 3 Westminster women's basketball team will complete the regular season this weekend by playing a pair of Frontier Conference road games. They begin the week at Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. (MT) before the finale at Montana Tech on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. (MT).

Griffin Fast Break: Westminster enters the final week of the regular season at 21-2 on the season and they have clinched at least a share of a seventh-straight Frontier Conference regular season title with an 11-1 mark in league games. They have already secured the No. 1-seed at the conference tournament and need one win or a loss by Montana State-Northern to win the regular season title outright.
 
Offense Notebook: The Griffins average 65.13 points per game on the year and they have scored at least 70 points in a game six times on the year. The team shoots 43.5 percent from the field to rank 14th in the NAIA and they are third in the country by making 37.1 percent from beyond the arc. The Griffins make 7.26 treys per game – 13th in the NAIA – while posting 15.74 assists per game which ranks 16th nationally.
 
Defense Notebook: Westminster leads the NAIA in scoring defense by holding the opposition to 47.83 points per game. They have held 15 opponents under 50 points during the year – including eight in conference play – while placing fifth in the NAIA by holding the opposition to 34 percent shooting. The Griffins force 15.61 turnovers per game with an average of 8.04 steals per contest.
 
Leaders: Tia Pappas has scored a team-high 306 points on the season for an average of 13.30 points per game. Amy Krommenhoek has scored 269 points (11.70 per game) and she leads the team with 120 assists and 52 steals. Amanda Hacking leads the Griffins with 177 rebounds (70 offensive) and Mika Pinner has a team-best 23 blocked shots.
 
Inside the Numbers: The Griffins are 16-0 on the season when they score at least 60 points in a game. They are also perfect in 18 outings when they hold the lead at halftime. Westminster enters the week 18-0 when grabbing more rebounds than their opponent and they are 12-0 on Saturdays.
 
Looking Back: Westminster claimed two wins in their final home games of the regular season, defeating then-No. 22 Great Falls (Mont.) and then-No. 11 Montana State-Northern. Winters earned Frontier Conference Player of the Week honors after scoring 20 points against Great Falls and then adding 10 against MSU-Northern. She was 6-of-12 from beyond the arc in the two wins with nine assists and five rebounds. Pappas scored 14 points against UGF to become the eighth player in school history to score 1,000 career points.
 
Frontier Conference Tournament: Westminster has clinched the No. 1-seed for the upcoming Frontier Conference Tournament and will be playing at home in any game they play. The Griffins will host a semifinal game on March 6 against the lowest remaining seed following the quarterfinal games on March 3. The championship game will be played on March 9, with the Griffins hosting should they win their semifinal contest. All games of the conference tournament begin at 7 p.m. (MT) and tickets for the Westminster semifinal game are available at WestminsterGriffins.com/tickets.
 
In the Polls: Westminster remained No. 3 in this week's NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll for the second-straight week. The Griffins received 230 points to match the school-record for highest ranking and they have now been ranked in the top-five of the poll for 23-straight polls. Westminster has been ranked in 46-straight polls and 91 polls all-time.
 
Playing Ranked Foes: Westminster has faced 11 opponents this season that were ranked at the time of the game and gone 9-2 in those outings. The Griffins are 5-1 away from home in those contests while winning six-straight against ranked opponents. According to the Massey Ratings, Westminster has faced the second-toughest schedule in the NAIA this season.
 
Among the Best: Going back to the start of the 2011-12 season, Westminster has amassed 99 wins and recorded a .846 winning percentage. They rank eighth in the NAIA during the time in wins and third during the span in winning percentage. Only Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) at .920 and Oklahoma City at .909 have a better winning percentage over the past four seasons. This season, the Griffins rank fifth in winning percentage (.907) and are one of 18 teams that have at least 21 wins.
 
Home Dominance: Since the start of the 2012-13 season, Westminster has compiled a 35-2 mark in the Behnken Field House. The .946 winning percentage during that time is the best three-year home mark in school history. They have won six-straight home games overall and nine-straight against unranked opponents. The Griffins are 146-57 (.719) all-time at home and 112-22 (.836) in the Behnken Field House.
 
Chasing Milestone Wins: Westminster begins play this week with 298 wins in program history. They have an all-time winning percentage of .617 and recorded nine-straight 20-win seasons. Head Coach Shelley Jarrard enters the week needing three wins to reach 100 for her career. Jarrard ranks second in school history for wins (97) behind the 146 by JD Gustin, and she holds the record with a .851 winning percentage.
 
Live by the Long Ball: Westminster currently ranks third in the NAIA by shooting 37.1 percent from beyond the arc. They place 13th in the country by making 7.26 threes per game and their 167 total threes place 25th in the country. The Griffins have made at least five treys in all but four games this season and they have gone for double-digit triples four times. Winters ranks fifth in the country by making 44.4 percent from deep with Krommenhoek making 36.7 percent to rank 41st.
 
Getting Defensive: Westminster has established itself as one of the top defensive teams in the country over the past four seasons. This season, the Griffins lead the NAIA by allowing just 47.83 points per game and they have held 13 opponents to 46 points or less. The opposition shoots 34 percent from the floor and 29.8 percent from three to rank Westminster fifth and 45th respectively in those categories.
 
Defense to Offense: While they hold opponents to under 50 points per game, Westminster has also taken advantage of turnovers by the opposition. The Griffins are forcing 15.61 turnovers per game which results in 16.65 points per game. That is 1.07 points from every turnover and accounts for 25.6 percent of their total scoring average. Westminster ranks 20th in the NAIA with a 3.52 turnover margin and they are allowing 10.70 points per game from their own miscues.
 
Pappas for Player of the Year: The Frontier coaches selected Westminster senior Tia Pappas as the Preseason Player of the Year in the conference and she isn't disappointing. Pappas is currently ranked in the Frontier top-20 in 14 statistical categories and she is eighth in the conference by scoring 13.30 points per game. Pappas is shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 48.5 percent from beyond the arc. She has scored in double figures 16 times this season with four 20-point efforts.
 
In the Club: With 14 points against Great Falls on Feb. 19, Pappas became the eighth player in school history to score 1,000 career points as a Griffin. Pappas has averaged 9.24 points per game during her career and her 13.3 scoring average this season is a career high. She begins the week with 1,016 career points and is on pace to finish sixth in school history in the category.
 
Krommenhoek a Starter: After being named the Frontier Conference Sixth-Player of the Year last season, Amy Krommenhoek has moved into the starting lineup this season. The senior is scoring 11.70 points per game and she has been in double figures 16 times. Krommenhoek ranks eighth in the country by handing out 5.22 assists per game while sitting fourth with her 3.24 assist-to-turnover ratio. She makes 36.7 percent from three – 41st in the country – and she is 38th in the NAIA by making 2.22 treys per game. The senior grabs 2.26 steals per game to sit 29th in the NAIA.
 
Looking Ahead: Westminster will play host to a seminal game of the Frontier Conference Tournament on March 6. The game will begin at 7 p.m. (MT) against a team to be determined and tickets for the game are available at WestminsterGriffins.com/tickets.
