Westminster Griffins women's basketball closed out the regular season with a hard-fought road victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating Chadron State 73-68 at the Chicoine Events Center in Chadron, Nebraska. The win moves the Griffins to 9-17 overall and 6-14 in RMAC play to conclude the 2025-26 regular season. Westminster will not advance to postseason play.
Game Breakdown
First Half
Westminster found itself in an early hole, as Chadron State jumped out to a 7-0 lead to open the contest. The Griffins battled back, chipping away at the deficit throughout the first quarter and cutting it to one at 17-18 heading into the second period. A back-and-forth second quarter saw the lead change hands multiple times, with the score tied on multiple occasions. Chadron State ultimately extended the lead to as many as six and carried a 40-36 advantage into halftime. The game was tied nine times throughout the contest and the lead changed five times, a sign of just how competitive the matchup was from start to finish.
Second Half
Westminster came out of the locker room with renewed energy in the third quarter, outscoring Chadron State 18-14 to close within four. The Griffins tied the game late in the third on a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Klowie Pike to knot things up at 54-54 heading into the fourth.
The fourth quarter was a tense, back-and-forth affair with neither team able to pull away. Westminster finally seized control late, and clutch free throw shooting down the stretch sealed the 73-68 victory. Teuila Nawahine was a force in the final minutes, converting key free throws to ice the game. Westminster finished 16-of-21 from the charity stripe on the day, good for 76.2%, while generating 23 points off turnovers and 23 fast break points.
Griffin Performances
Teuila Nawahine led Westminster with 21 points on 7-of-17 shooting, going 7-of-9 from the free throw line to go along with 7 rebounds and a game-high 6 steals in 34 minutes. In doing so, Nawahine moved into a tie for 7th on Westminster's all-time career scoring list with 1,061 points, a fitting milestone to close out the regular season.
Ellie Mitchell had another strong outing with 16 points on 7-of-23 shooting, adding 7 assists and 3 steals. Mitchell's playmaking was a key factor in Westminster's offensive rhythm throughout the game.
Klowie Pike provided a big spark with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, connecting on 2-of-3 from three, including the game-tying buzzer-beater to end the third quarter.
Nisa Ellis recorded 8 points and 8 rebounds, adding a steal and a block while grabbing 6 offensive boards.
Madison Anderson contributed 4 points and 5 rebounds in 18 minutes of action.
Off the bench, Makeili Ika chipped in 7 points on 3-of-4 shooting with 3 assists, and Emily Evans added 4 points and a team-high 10 rebounds while playing a key role in Westminster's second-chance opportunities.
