SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster men's soccer team returns to Dumke Field this weekend after spending the last two weeks on the road. Westminster will play two games during the home stand as they host the Griffin Classic.
The Griffins open the week's play on Friday at 4:30 p.m. MT with a contest against McPherson (Kan.). They then return to Frontier Conference action on Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. matchup versus Great Falls (Mont.). The weekend comes to a close on Sunday at 11 a.m. when McPherson and Great Falls face each other.
The games on Saturday and Sunday will be broadcast live on Griffins TV which is available online and through the Livestream app on mobile devices and Roku players. There will also be live stats available for all three games of the Griffins Classic.
Griffins NotebookWestminster returns to the home pitch at 7-4-1 on the season after going 1-2 on the road last weekend. After upsetting No. 19 Midland (Neb.), 3-1, last Friday, the Griffins fell 3-0 at No. 12 Grand View (Iowa) on Saturday and 2-1 in double overtime at Bellevue on Sunday. They are 5-0-1 at Dumke Field on the year while outscoring the opposition 12-1 in those games.
The Griffins enter the week scoring 1.58 goals per game with an assist on 15 of their 19 goals scored. They average 11.8 shots per game with 46.1 percent of those shots on goal. The Griffins are taking 7.4 shots for every goal scored and they have taken 57 corner kicks and are 1-of-2 on penalty kicks.
Westminster opponents are averaging 0.92 goals per game with the Griffins posting six shutouts to lead the NAIA. The opposition takes 13.5 shots per game and they manage 38.3 percent of those attempts on goal. The Griffins surrender a goal on every 14.7 shots the opponents take while giving up 42 corner kicks.
Jonnathan Rodriguez and
Michael Porter are tied for the team lead with three goals apiece.
Andrew Clayton and
Connor Thompson have each scored two goals on the year. Clayton has also claimed a team-best five assists and ranks fourth in the country with that total. He is also the team leader with 26 shots, 12 shots on goal, and two game-winning goals.
Three different Griffins have appeared in goal this season with
Logan Butzier posting a team-best 0.80 goals-against-average. He has made 33 saves with four wins, three shutouts and a .852 save percentage.
Sean Lyne has recorded 19 saves with a 0.95 GAA and
Taylor Ruff has a 0.96 GAA with nine saves.
About McPhersonMcPherson comes to Salt Lake City at 3-2 on the year and riding a three-game winning streak. The Bulldogs have recorded a shutout in all three of those wins and they haven't allowed a goal in the last 271 minutes of action. They average 2.0 goals per game and attempt 21.6 shots and 7.4 shots on goal per outing. Nick Torres leads the team with three goals scored and Alex Ronnburg has a team-leading three assists. Aaron Parrott has made 22 saves with a 2.50 goals-against-average.
About Great FallsGreat Falls enters the weekend at 6-1 on the season and also winners of three straight games. They have recorded five shutouts on the year, including the last three games, and they haven't surrendered a goal in the last 293 minutes. The Argonauts average 2.0 goals per game and they put 57.1 percent of their 12 shots per game on goal. Christoffer Bisbo leads the team with three goals while four others have scored two goals. Danny Delgadillo leads the Argos with three assists. Jose Pena has a 0.62 GAA with 15 saves in goal.
Record StreakAfter allowing a goal to Carroll (Mont.) at the 10:31 mark of the season opener, Westminster didn't surrender a goal for the next 558:36 minutes of action. They established new school records for consecutive shutout minutes and also for consecutive shutouts at five. They currently lead the NAIA with six shutouts on the season while also placing 30th in the national by giving up 0.56 goals per game.
Spreading the WealthThe 19 goals scored by the Griffins this season have come from 12 different players with 14 players recording at least one point during the year.
Jonnathan Rodriguez and
Michael Porter are currently leading the team with three goals apiece while
Andrew Clayton and
Connor Thompson have each scored twice. There has also been six different Griffins that have scored a game-winning goals with only Clayton having multiple winners.
Sharing the RockWestminster has been playing more of a possession game in 2014 and it has translated to 15 assists on the team's 19 goals scored this season. Three players have accounted for 12 of those assists with Clayton leading the way with five assists.
Manuel Duenas has tallied four assists and Thompson getting three helpers.

Logan Butzier,
Sean Lyne, and
Taylor Ruff has combined to make 51 saves with an .823 save percentage this season. The group has posted a 0.89 goals-against-average with six shutouts. Butzier leads the team with his 0.80 GAA and four wins. Lyne has posted two shutouts and 19 saves for a 0.95 GAA while Ruff has nine saves and a 0.96 GAA.
Climbing the NAIA Wins ChartWith seven wins this season, head coach
Chris Dorich now has 281 wins in his Westminster career. He currently ranks eighth in the NAIA among active coaches in that category. Dorich is in his 31st season at the helm of the Westminster program and is one of three NAIA coaches across the country with 30 years at one school.

Home CookingOver the years, Westminster has been tough to beat at home. The Griffins have compiled a winning record at home every year since 2001 and only had a losing record at home four times in 30 seasons. Since Dumke Field opened in 2005, Westminster has gone 60-20-5 on the home turf. This season, Westminster is 5-0-1 at home and they have outscored the opposition 12-1 in those games.
Looking AheadAfter this weekend, the Griffins will be off until Oct. 11 when they travel to Helena, Mont. for a noon MT contest at Carroll (Mont.).
