MLAX Begins Three-Game Road Trip

SALT LAKE CITY – The No. 24 Westminster College men's lacrosse team will spend the next week on the road to play three games. The trip begins on Fri. at UNLV at 6 p.m. MST before visiting NCAA DIII foe Whittier (Calif.) on Sunday at 1 p.m. MST. The final game of the trip takes place on Feb. 26 at Loyola Marymount (Calif.) at 4 p.m. MST.

GRIFFIN NOTES
Westminster takes to the road at 1-0 on the season after defeating Utah State, 19-6, in Logan, Utah last Sat. The win marked the third straight season the Griffins have opened the year with a victory. They 19 goals are the second-most ever scored in a season opener. Westminster last started 2-0 during the 2013 season and they have only been 2-0 twice in school history.

OFFENSE NOTEBOOK
>Westminster's 19 goals in the season opener are the second-most the team has ever scored in its first game, trailing the 20 scored against Western State in 2009.
>The Griffins assisted on 42.1 percent of the goals they scored at Utah State with eight assists.
>The team was also efficient with the man-advantage scoring on three of their six extra-man opportunities.
>Westminster was credited with 47 shots in the win with 78.7 percent of them on goal.
>Elias Fairman scored a team-high five goals in the win after scoring 43 goals in 2013.
>Fairman would also lead the team with six points against Utah State.
>He attempted eight shots with six on goal.
>One of the five goals came during an extra-man opportunity.
>Kyle Postler notched a hat trick at Utah State as he tries to top the 35 goals he scored last season.
>Postler took six shots and had five of them on cage.
>Eric Crosby scored three goals in his Griffin debut.
>Newcomer Josh Holland led the team with three assists in his first game as a Griffin.
>Holland would also score two goals to finish second on the squad with five points.
>Both Crosby and Holland scored man-up goals.

GOALIE NOTEBOOK
>Both Chris Burckle and Ben Tourek saw time in cage at Utah State.
>The two combined to make eight saves with a .571 save percentage.
>Burckle made the start and played the first three quarters.
>During his time in cage, Burckle recorded five saves and a .625 save percentage.
>He allowed three goals to notch his first win of the season.
>Tourek made three saves during his time in cage during the fourth quarter.
>He finished the game with a .500 save percentage.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTEBOOK
>Westminster picked up 40 ground balls in the win over Utah State while seeing the Aggies claim 31 GBs.
>Jake Berard led the team with six ground balls against Utah State.
>Andrew Baird would gather four ground balls in the opener.
>Westminster went 13-of-25 at the faceoff-X at Utah State.
>Berard went 9-of-15 in faceoffs for a .600 winning percentage.
>Richard Chen took 10 faceoffs with four wins (40%).
>The Griffins were successful in 80.0 percent of their clearing attempts, going 20-of-25.

ABOUT THE OPPOSITION
>All three opponents on this trip are first-time opponents for the Griffins.
>UNLV has played four games already this season, going 2-2 overall and winning the last two they have played.
>Whittier is a NCAA DIII team that will be playing its first game of the season on Sunday.
>Loyola Marymount has started the year at 1-1 by defeating Concordia (Calif.) and falling to Santa Clara (Calif.).

AROUND THE RMLC
>Brigham Young sits atop the table with a 3-0 start to the season, including two wins away from home last week.
>Utah split two games during a trip to Calif. last weekend and are now 1-1 on the season.
>BYU, Colorado and Colorado State will all be in action this weekend.
>All five teams from Division I will qualify for the RMLC Tournament with the sixth team coming from the Division 1AA group of three teams.
>The tournament will open with quarterfinals games on April 26 at the home sites of the No. 3 and 4 seeds with the top two seeds earing a bye into the semi-finals the following week in Grand Junction, Colo.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Griffins will return home for the home opener against Utah Valley on March 6. The game at Dumke Field will begin at 4 p.m. MST.
