Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's soccer team snapped a two-game losing skid with a 4-0 win over Johnson & Wales (Colo.) on Friday afternoon at Dumke Field.
Westminster (4-4) entered the afternoon having not scored a goal in 189 minutes of action. That streak came to an end in the 13th minute when
Anthony Alcox took a cross from
Aaron Rees and fired a shot into the net for the 1-0 lead. Alcox was moving away from the goal to get the pass in the penalty area and then turned and shot all in one motion for his first goal of the season.
The game would remain 1-0 into the 73rd minute when
Ryan Smith found the ball on his foot in the penalty area amid a crowd of defenders. He took one touch and put it in the goal for the 2-0 advantage and his fourth goal of the season.
Henry Dankwa then came into the game in the 81st minute and quickly made a difference. In the 84th minute, Dankwa slid a shot inside the far post on a first touch at the top of the six for his first career goal.
Andrew Clayton played the ball into Dankwa to notch his first career assist.
Dankwa would then add the fourth goal of the game for the Griffins in the 87th minute.
Connor Thompson took a shot that was deflected on the way in and found the foot of Dankwa who put the rebound away to cap the afternoon.
Westminster had an 18-8 edge in shots during the game and they put 10 of those attempts on frame. The limited Johnson & Wales (2-2) to just three shots on goal while also taking a 10-4 edge in corner kicks.
Alcox and Smith led all Griffins with four shot attempts. Smith and Thompson put three shots on frame.
Logan Butzier earned his third shutout of the season with three saves.
The Griffins will look to continue this offensive showing on Saturday when they welcome Great Falls (Mont.) to Dumke Field. The Frontier Conference opener for both teams will begin at 2 p.m.
