Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's lacrosse team had its four-game winning streak snapped with a 14-8 loss to Colorado Mesa on Saturday afternoon at Dumke Field.
Westminster falls to 6-4 on the season with the loss. Colorado Mesa, an NCAA DII team, counted the game as an exhibition.
The Griffins came out quick with goals from
Elias Fairman,
Collin Madsen and Kyle Postelr giving them a 3-0 lead less than four minutes into the game. Colorado Mesa would then take control, scoring six of the next seven goals of the first half to lead 6-4 at halftime.
Kevin Gee would strike for the Griffins early in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 6-5. That was answered with back-to-back goals from Austin Pridham and Steve Brandenburg of the Mavericks to open up a three goal advantage. After
Jake Arthur scored for the Griffins, CMU put another two goals on the board to lead 10-6 with 3:34 to play in the third.
Arthur scored with four seconds left in the third quarter, but CMU would tally the first two goals of the fourth to open up a 12-7 lead with 12:09 remaining. After
Kevin Gee scored for Westminster, CMU closed the game with goals from Dylan Duresky and Josh Russell to preserve the win.
Arthur led the Griffins with three goals and he had two assists for five points. Gee scored twice with one assist. The Griffins managed 33 shots in the game with 20 of them put on cage.
Erik Gronseth recorded 10 saves in cage while
Chris Burckle made four stops during his 12 minutes protecting the Griffins goal.
Westminster will return to action on Friday when they welcome Montana State to Dumke Field. The game is slated for a 4 p.m.
