Griffins Even Frontier Record with 92-52 Win

Box Score SALT LAKE CITY – The 19th-ranked Westminster College men's basketball team got back to .500 in Frontier Conference play with a 92-52 win over Dickinson State (N.D.) on Thursday night in the Behnken Field House.

Westminster (15-4, 3-3) never trailed in the game. They slowly and methodically pulled away from Dickinson State (9-11, 2-3) in the first half and opened up a 15 point lead when Travis Tucker made a three with 3:31 to play in the half. After DSU got back within 10, the Griffins closed the half with an 8-2 burst to carry a 45-29 lead into halftime.

That run would expand to 27-5 after Westminster held the Frontier newcomers without a field goal for the first 6:02 of the second half and opened up a 64-32 lead. Jake Orchard converted an and-one with 8:29 remaining to make the score 81-43 and the reserves played the rest of the night.

The Griffins finished the game shooting 53.1 percent from the floor as they were above 52 percent in each half. They made six triples and had a 34-31 edge on the glass. Westminster grabbed 14 offensive rebounds which resulted in 17 points and they outscored DSU 52-18 in the paint. Defensively they limited the visitors to 37.2 percent shooting and forced 28 turnovers which resulted in 33 points for the Griffins.

Orchard led all scorers with 19 points and he made all but one of his eight shots. He made both of his attempts from beyond the arc and went 3-of-4 at the foul line. Orchard also grabbed four rebounds, three assists and one steal. Jordan Bjornberg scored 11 points off the bench while Alex Drecksel and Blake Skidmore had 10 points apiece.

Johnie Sanders led Dickinson with 13 points in 21 minutes off the bench. James Hayden added five points and four assists.

Westminster will be back in action on Saturday when they wrap-up this four-game home-stand against Carroll (Mont.). The action begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Behnken Field House.
